Unreleased SMS "Game de check!
Post Posted: Sun Apr 03, 2005 9:47 am
*EDIT* Topic renamed from "SMS - Self Check 3-in-1 from Tokyo Marine and Fire Insurance Co. LTD (Asunde Manabu Koutsuu Rule)".

From the awesome Suka Sega's Nofu,
This is (apparently) a copy of a copy of an article published in a Japanese paper around 1988:

A driving rule related 3-in-1 cartridge for the Sega Master System & Sega Mark III, very much in the same spirit as Car Licence (except this one looks better :)

Auctionned
Post Posted: Fri Jan 01, 2010 7:52 am
A cartridge for it is being auctionned now.
The name is "Game De Check! 交通安全), meaning something along the line of "Let's check traffic security with a game!".

http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k124368577

The initial auction price is 3 millions yens (about $32000) which the seller mention is a fantasy price, and he looking for direct offers starting from a tenth of that, 300000 yens. Meaning it is just too expensive, but I think it is possible that it sells. Game is tested and working although there's no screenshots provided.

Attaching the auction text.

Seller doesn't say from where he obtained the cartridge, but he held it in his collection for many years. He makes a reference to this very thread being the only place talking about it on the internet (quoting me for using the word "legend").

Says its good looking and well playable (with a "surreal pop" feeling to it). To be relativized on the fact that it is a driving security software, mind you.

I would be interested in purchasing it but it's not even a semi decent price now. Just hoping that the buyer is someone I know, maybe the cartridge can be borrowed. :)

Actually there's more information on Suka Sega (unsure when it appeared) from various old articles:

Well it's at least fascinately and stupidly expensive.
My offer is much lower than the asked price but since it seems like he's not selling it yet I thought I would give it a go.

Perhaps it be worth trying a forum fundraiser for any future prototype buying if its being sold to the highest bidder. I guess at least some people would be willing to donate towards getting a game so it could be dumped, rather than Bock trying to pay entirely himself. Its something that has been done on other forums for unreleased games.

Are we strong enough as a community to gather that kind of amount AND want to? I was ready to pay quite a bit (and Adol too I guess) but not even as high as the reserve price.

I don't mind trying but generally those occasions are pretty rare and I'm not fond of encouraging the price raise for those stuff anyway.

Plus it's not like we have great organization on anything ^^
FluBBa donated some money last year which helped me buy a GG prototype but I couldn't dump it yet. Things are as much delayed by the fact that few people are working on improving our dumping technology and when they do it's quite seldom (there's no off the shelf GG Reader design anywhere to be seen).

Been a while.

The subject and come out of this game is ....
There was only actual game I knew was never seen.
As far as the contents of the auction, it's like viewing a site that people have here.
Game I want is expensive.
It sounds like a bid of 200,000 yen.

No prototype fundraiser has ever raised that much money, I don't think we could have pooled together for this one.

Video from 1988
Post Posted: Tue Oct 08, 2019 10:00 am
Lots of news today (I'll make two post).

First, someone uploaded a short TV segment where the game is shown:

https://twitter.com/onda_to/status/1181406893090033669

The video was actually uploaded in 2011, somehow the only link to it I can find on the web are the tweet above and a YT comment three months ago.

(I am attaching a copy of the video file here.)

New auction with manuals, hard case

(Also see the video I posted above a few minutes ago^)

In the tradition of overly expensive car-related software, we have a new contender:

https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d392865103
*EDIT* moved to https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m365543231

Someone posted the game for auction, this time with 2 booklets and a hard case holding a SMS system as well.

Current auction starts at 3,500,000円 (about $30K) which means it is not going to sell and the buyer is going to be waiting for offers, except with YAJ any message sent to owner is made public so it is traditionally not a place were people perform much offering. More likely it is going to sell to private hands for under a tenth of that.

The manual also shows a date of 1987/12/16.
We have a page http://www.smspower.org/Games/GameDeCheckKoutsuuAnzen-SMS with a screenshot of the title screen as published by the owner (who dumped it, but won't allow to release it).

SEGA Game de check! Koutsuu Anzen

Game de check! Koutsuu Anzen

International shipping is not available.

Not $30K though... it's not even a good game, this is really a curiosity rather than something worth spending thousands on.

I don't think it worth it ^-^;; It just a special software made for a well known Japanese insurance company that must have just explained about basic road traffic laws. I wouldn't be surprised if such game was available at those parks in Japan that explain about road laws in general (we have one in the North of Kyushu).

Usually the park is free and allow you to borrow a bike and you ride in a closed road environment to learn about traffic light, signs etc. We mostly just went to do some cycling, like most people did (laugh).

I'd say any unreleased SMS game is worth of preservation... but indeed not for that kind of money.

The long lost Bio Force Ape for NES for example sold in Yahoo! Auctions for 250,000¥ (a little more than 2,000€). More than 10 times that? Don't think so.

The seller might really believe he can get 3.5 million ¥ because he is emphasizing he has the "full set". So I'm guessing it will take at the very least 1-2 weeks until he becomes open to offers.

Bio Force Ape had much more hype, though.
There was a hoax/prank find of the game five years prior, on the once-popular game collector forum Digital Press, that created a few memes.

128 people watching the auction right now.

It's not a very high number, since expensive and rare auctions attract a lot of curiosity. (The 10 million ¥ Super Famicom complete collection had already 987 watchers in the first 1-2 days.) Unfortunately the seller will probably misunderstand it as genuine buying interest.

Collecting pledges:
I have in mind a maximum price I would like to bid. If you wish to pledge some extra money to help buying it, you can send me a private message with your pledge. Any help very appreciated but please only do it if you have the mean to, don't overstretch yourself. Thank you. (Obviously with intent of releasing the dump + scans).

I won the auction!
Didn't want to announce it until we got hold of the game. More news when possible.

(Thanks to a lot of people for their help! I got about 165000 yens of pledges out of the total and that really helped as my own spending limit was around 400000 yens).

Game has been dumped now.
Will work on the scans.
Goal is to get everything scanned before sending to France (in case of shipping issue).

Considering getting a squad team to work on a translation patch, would anyone be interested? (Need hacking person to extract script first)

It’s that or a return flight in person...

Yes my post was misleading, I'm most probably going to wait for someone returning from Japan to bring it here. If we ship it with insurance I would likely need to pay VAT on whole value which would be ridiculous (even more than cost of a flight ticket..). *EDIT* Should be able to get it around the end of January.

Congrats Bock! This is a rare one where you got the full insurance salesman kit, I guess, ha ha. Hope you get it safely and can translate it.

I confirm this safely arrived in Paris now.
The game has both PSG and FM music.
Game was clearly developed by game-conscious people probably by some team at Sega, it "feels" very Japan-era SMS.

Attached some quick photos of it runtime on my old monitor, five minutes before the monitor decided to start smoking strongly and strongly died (there are paper capacitor in those, apparently it's fixable).

Quite a bunch of text, it would be nice to work out a translation.
Would anyone with programming/hacking translation experience be interested in working on extracting the script and reinjecting something with an english font?

Wow, we got more than we bargained for, so this is actually more of a game than we thought! Complete with both PSG and FM music, no less.

So happy we could get together as a community and help Bock win the game.
