Looking for some info to complete the info file, I found this page http://cheats.gamespy.com/master-system/wonder-boy-in-monster-land/ in GameSpy that states the game was developed by Sega's AM7 team and published by Westone, what seems weird. Please, can anyone confirm this?

About the picture, I'd go for the second because I'm not really happy with the result of the first (that gradiation...). Because the concept is liked, I think I'm gonna try again with it.

Well, it wasn't published by Westone and AM7 was an internal team name in 1988 (if it wasn't just Team Shinobi). They probably mean developed by Westone and published by Sega (in general).

My general idea for the cover images is to make a simple image based on the title screen; often that ends up as just the title screen logo text. I did redo the gradient for WB3's title screen, because for such a thing it is easy to redo it at a high colour depth, but for this case I would say having the start of level 1 is unnecessary, and there was no gradient on the game so why add it here? I'd rather see the same screen with a light blue background than one with a gradient.

Gamespy is not a reputable source for info on old games.

To Maxim:
Indeed, this is a special case. The logo is quite graphical itself, but I thought that adding a really classical image (not only of this game, the series and the videogame in general) was cool. Gradient does not work. Initially, it was added to increase the contrast of the logo. Here is your suggestion.

Yeah, neither old or new. I was quite sure about the publisher, but adding the development team is nice. I'll wander the internet for a while trying to find this info's validity.

Hmm, I didn't realise the logo sky matches the background sky. As you suggested, the contrast is poor. I'm not sure what would be a good solution.

Why aren't the images pixel-perfect? That is one of the conditions...

The development team was most certainly Westone themselves, according to their website.

I they refer to the arcade version, because they specify system in other games.

Here's a version of the cover with a smooth gradient. I think it works pretty well.

I'd like to keep the original palette, but your cover look really nice. I added it to the packages, and here they are. Again, I'll wait 2-3 days before creating the page.

It is using the two original shades of blue. There is no reason to limit the cover image to the SMS palette. Notice that I did something similar with the gradient on WB3's title screen:
