Title: Passing Breeze (New Age Mix)

Hey Folks,

This entry was made in a rather disjointed manner. This project was started on one PC and finished on another PC! Lets not go into the exact details but errm lets just say a hard drive "may" have been thrown out the window in the process.

Okies, this year decided to tackle Outrun for a change. I know this entry may not impress, but its simple, straight and laid back. Tools used, Reason and Transcribe.

Good luck to everyone else in the competition!

NOTE: This entry was late by 14 hours and 36 minutes at the time of writing. I had a hard disk failiure on my music machine.. Sorry!

A very smooth arrangement of the original. It's a fair bit slower (at least compared to the SMS version) which gives it a more laid back feeling.

I can imagine sitting in one of those posh cocktail bars or restaurant in a big 5 star hotel up town Osaka.
A much more classier version. Top song. I like it.

Great tune! This definitely has a "70s lounge jazz muzak" feel to it, which I love. Makes me think of Isaac Hayes' Bumpy's Lament, the Rainbow Café tune in Police Quest 4 and countless others in this sort of soundtrack style.

The slick sound and synthesised bass work fine in this genre. I also think the 6-minute duration is alright, because the tune is so relaxed and lean on the ear, with a nice flow. :)

Only complaint I have is the drums and cymbals stick out a little too much sometimes.[/i]

The timing is very tight in this one, its been great to see your compositions mature in that regard.

Overall a nicely laid back, chillout kinda tune.

Thanks DJ, I did take particular care with the drums on this track but in terms of levels I was in a rush to get this entry in so the levels aren't polished to a nice level.

Thanks

This is really nice.
I liked the drum line a lot. Good sounds and good playing. The Electric piano worked very well for this tune. However the bass, did not, enough to de-tract from the experience. A more organic bass sound would have fitted right in. Perhaps go real and record a real bass.
The arrange is almost verbatim with the original, so no issues there. But i did not like the high squealing synths that came up near the end (around 5:20). Could've lived without those.
Mixing wise, no complaints, except that the crash cymbal is too overpowering. But not a main issue.
Overall a VERY enjoyable song.

Good choice of song, nice and smooth arrangement. I'd say the drums are perhaps a bit over the top, I think a more laid back rhythm would have been nice, at least during the really slow parts of the song, but it's not like they're unbearable. Overall this stays close to the original, and it's also not too different from the version by SteveSMS for the 2007 compo. Not surprising as it works really well this way. Still, I'd love to see someone take this song in a new direction next time.

Thanks for the feedback Johannes, I agree with the drums, perhaps after the competition I will look at making another version of this and taking it in a different direction :)
