Competition Time! [2008 music & coding contest discussion]
Post Posted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 11:09 am
Hey everyone,

Well its this time of year again where we need to start thinking of the annual SMSPower coding and music competitions. I think this is running into its 4th year now and each year has been more successful then previous years. So this year does anyone think new rules are needed or we need to broaden the competitions or has anyone got any new ideas that we could try for the competitions this year??

For now keep this thread pretty broad and then we will go into the nitty gritty of it later in the month..

So everyone post your ideas

Regards,
Scott

Carry on as before, I reckon. We should make a prize fund this year, too. And then I won't be able to enter...

Yep the prize fund is a cool idea, my SMSPower shirt has well faided from being in the sun too much, plus one of my dogs made a toy out of it, luckily I got it off him before he did much damage to it (damn puppies)!

Id most definitely add a few bob to the kitty.

So that leads to the question, what prizes shall we look into this year??

I suggest SMSPower shirts as prizes, because I still want one :)

Hey everyone,

March has started already. This means you all have under a month to get coding and music making!!!! In all seriousness though can we organise some prizes this year, I will only be too willing to send over a few bob to the kitty :)

My SMS Power shirt has well had it, its sun faded and has been eaten by my dogs :S

So who wants to come up with a design for the shirts??

Hopefully making good entries should be your own best incentive for participating. I don't mind doing t-shirts (if we have donation to fund them) if we have a nice design that can fits printing technique constraints.

A separate demo / intro and game section would be good.

For the music competition it would be nice to see something similar: Let's separate chiptune and ....er...non-chiptune entries.

That obviously would mean that there should be four #1 prizes though...

That's two much IHMO. We are not garanteed to have even 5 proper entries.

I think that splitting the coding competition in two categories would make it easier to just throw something quick together for the intro/demo section, so you actually might see more releases...

The games section obviously won't have many entries, but there's also less competition so chances aren't bad you'll come in 1st...

Hmm I have to agree with Bockie on that one, I think we will just leave the comps as they are.

Me and DMEnduro are devising some shirt designs, so hopefully we will have some prototypes soon. We need to get a fancy flash thing again, I can speak to Niloctronic and see what he can come up with (he did the original).

People should just throw something together anyway. There's no shame in being a "happy looser", the only shame is in never releasing anything.

I took some feedback from the last discussion on t-shirt concepts.
Idea 1: Modified Alex Kidd cover art to include music and coding concepts.
Idea 2: We already had an SMS1 diagram, anybody want an SMS2 version?

I also considered colour schemes.
- white on smspower blue (like last time)
- smspower blue on black
- white on black (probably too mega-drivey)
- blue or purple on white (like a manual)

Opposite of last time, have the pic on the front, competition text on back? It would be kind of like a band tour t-shirt. :)

oohhh that SMS 2 is ultra sexy, heres my two bob.think the SMS 2 would look cool if music and code flew from the cartridge slot. As for Alex thats rather cool as well.

Export Alex Kidd is so lame. Japanese Alex Kidd is cool:

And the SMS2 rocks. I may have to take some time off work to write something to win one of those. (Or just submit Picross again, just my luck that I only enter when there's no prizes.)

It's probably because the SMS1 was rendered to 1-bit. I can render it aliased for you though, if you want.

Flash Animation
Post Posted: Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:33 am
Is there anyone willing to make a flash animation similar to the one found on http://www.smspower.org/music/competition ? If I wasnt totally useless at flash I would give it a shot, but also I simply don't have the time.

By which, Jacko means this one:

Which was actually used in both 2006 and 2007. It says "2nd" at the end but this year is the fourth competition.

Edit: discussion of whether or not you can see the embedded flash split to a new topic.

Well I´m here.

There was this new banner for last year´s music competition, I asked Bock today if you guys intend to use it.

The banner could use some optimization and of course a correct competition ordinal. (4th instead of 2nd).

I believe that´s nice given the time we have (1 week).

Please let me know.

Work done
Post Posted: Sat Mar 22, 2008 5:32 pm
This year I had to be creative in a different sort of way.

Last year´s prototype banner had 658KB, no good for practical use:

http://www.impulseinformatica.com.br/vgm/vgm2007.html

now

This year´s polished and reduced banner surely lost some weight: it now stands with 138KB with all the original soundtrack and basically the same idea. Only a minor modification at the middle scene of the banner:

http://www.impulseinformatica.com.br/vgm/vgm_contest_2008.html

That´s the best I could do, hope you like it !

Niloct: can you setup a way that only when howering the banner sound is enabled (ideally), or a way to disable sound?
Thanks a lot!

Hmm
Post Posted: Sat Mar 22, 2008 6:26 pm
Yeah I thought about that a little.

I think a soundtrack button switch is more adequate than a rollover one.

There is one little problem: All the banner clickable area is set to open a new window with the competition URL.

But I´ll see if I can circumvent that.

BTW, you´re welcome =D

Background

Maxim,

The correct background color of the banner is #42b8d6

Can you change that in the HTML publication source ? That causes the tails problem.

Thanks.

Yeah no prizes, me, DMEnduro and SteveSMS had something kinda organised but it all kinda fell in a hole like my promises to do a SMS Power Radio show, but thats another issue....

Maxim does voting start on the 28th? and if so how long is voting for?? I would recommend one week.

New version of banner
Post Posted: Fri Mar 28, 2008 5:17 pm
Hi,

I uploaded 2 modified versions of the banner, now with sound control:

Sound off by default
http://www.impulseinformatica.com.br/vgm/vgm_contest_2008_sound_off.html

Sound on by default
http://www.impulseinformatica.com.br/vgm/vgm_contest_2008_sound_on.html

Please check and give some feedback about it.

Thanks.

My 2 cents
Post Posted: Sat Mar 29, 2008 1:00 am
Well, I think this year event teached us something didn´t it ?

We must plan this thing months before the competition, including the prizes.

Do you guys recall how this community was active in the fund raising for one of our competitions. That thing can happen again !

This year was more like: Hi we have a competition this year and the deadline is TOMORROW (lol) !

I know everyone´s busy but if we insist in keep this going I see no other option than planning, to either call public attention and to give our competitors time to work (I know it´s the same date every year, but an official announcement counts a lot like, a month before ?...).

IMHO.

This very true, I had for example wanted to enter the coding side but by the time I knew about the deadline it was already too late.

I also joined this forum well after the last comp so did not have the for-knowledge of last years to go on for information.

EDIT:
Actually having a banner on the frontpage at least a couple months before hand, possibly even with a countdown would be a fantastic way of raising awareness. It always the first place I look each day when I visit the site.

Yes I like this idea DJBass, the countdown idea is certainly a cool idea. Also I am at fault with this as well, if I had time to do some radio shows I would have certainly advertised the competition, but with my uni schedule I barely have time to do anything....

Also I did start this topic some time ago, but oh well these things happen.

Next year I would love to see planning starting in January or even late December and also it would not hurt to make the community announcements then.

We must all remain strong spirited and take things as they come.. We will have another competition and we will have a decent amount of entries next year :D
