SMS Power! Radio
Post Posted: Thu Nov 15, 2007 1:09 am
Hey Folks,

Yesterday I produced the 1st show of SMS Power! Radio. It was a thing that came by on the IRC channel after I was mucking around with a radio stream from my PC, then everyone said on the channel I should make it into a show, I have done exactly that.

SMS Power! Radio

Thanks All,
Jacko (aka DJ-Jacko to those on the IRC channel)

Why not host it somewhere like Google Pages? Or, if it's a long MP3, torrent it?

Thanks Maxim for the ideas, I looked at that google pages thing but can you import pre made html pages??

Torrenting could be an issue as I wouldn't want it to be a tracked torrent, a 57 minute show compressed at 64k was around the 26MB mark.

I tried uploading an HTML file and it seemed happy with that (I could browse to it), but then I saw that it has a 100MB limit so it's probably not worth it.

You mean you don't want to use a centralised tracker (to avoid association with illegal stuff)? You can use DHT instead, which just requires people to have a suitable client (all the major ones support it). That's what I used for the Zillion videos.

Maybe one day we'll have an SMS Power torrent tracker (if our host would allow it). However, there are some issues with such technologies right now that make me hesitant to try. If nothing else, it would use enough CPU and bandwidth to require a dedicated server.

well I will announce this, there is going to be another show, its going to be next tuesday/wednesday at 1.30am GMT, 12.00pm AU CST, 12.30pm AU EST and 5.30pm PST.

As normal there will be a podcast available but I will take this ones down until perhaps a torrent thingy is organised, I would have used google pages but yep as you said Maxim 100MB is no better then 80MB. So I plan to take down this weeks podcast and for anyone that wants it they can get in contact with me.

PM me the download details and I'll set up a torrent for it. Or just do it yourself, it's really easy (but requires you to leave a computer on for a few days at least).

I tried to set up a torrnet, in uTorrent I went crate a torrent, browsed to the mp3, hit private and put no trackers in the list, I then hit the create button. After that I sent to DMEnduro, he also used uTorrent but could not download it, I was seeding the torrent and I did have all the ports forwarded. For now though don't worry about a torrent I will host the show on my website.

Funny, I've tried finding said IRC channel before and haven't found it. Then again, maybe I've been on the wrong server :(

http://www.efnet.org/?module=servers have a look here for a server thats close to you. Then connect to the server with your IRC client. One you are on the server type
/join #smspower
and viola you should be on our IRC channel, you can then proceed to register with the bots. For more info check out http://efnetsmspower.mine.nu for specific channel info.

In other news, I have binded the show to a ShoutCAST server so it will be a lot easier to listen to the show. Click the original website link then click on the Listen page. All the info you need is there.

Thanks Folks and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

And that's why it didn't work. Private means no DHT, no servers and no DHT means no ability for anyone else to find it unless they manually add your IP.

Thanks Maxim, I figured as to why that was the case, so I assume in the tracker window I add my own IP address, it would make sense :P

Nope. Just don't make it private. People will then be able to connect only if they have the .torrent file.

Well, I finally got to listen to it; it's not half as bad as I'd feared. Jacko, can you publish the new download link? And what happened to the torrents?

Oh yes Maxim here we go
http://smspower1.channelwood.org/smspowerradio/shows

Select a show from the list, a page will be coming soon, also the torrent thing never really got going, but if people would prefer torrents I would not mind.... Its up to everyone else.

SteveSMS has joined in with this so he may be broadcasting as well, ill keep you updated. The SMSPower Radio site is broken, the php install on the server went a bit pear shaped, but Steve and I hope to get things running asap.

Also there will be no show on December 5th as I will be travelling.

Here's a couple of torrents for the shows so far.

Show 1
Show 2
Show 3

If anyone else already has the shows then feel free to join the swarm (just open the torrents above and point your torrent program at the existing files).

Thanks for the support guys,

Maxim, I could get 141107 to seed, but I pointed uTorrent at 211107 and would refuse to seed, my net bandwidth is running out fast this month so I cant seed until a next week sorry but I need to use the little bandwidth I have left for future shows.

Also please submit some songs to play, im a little stuck for ideas this week so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dang, tried to get on the IRC server for the second time ever, for some reason whenever I try to connect now, I'm either banned, or the connection timed out.

Try a different server, maybe one closer to you? They tend to be a bit picky.

If you use a common nick try changing it, adding underscores ( _ ) usually helps, thats why i'm not simply Jacko, that name is never available on EFNet.

Also big thanks to Maxim for the torrents, greatly appreciated, and also a huge thanks to the whole community for your continued support, the website is being fixed over the next week or so. Also SteveSMS will be helping me out to so check his broadcasts out as well.

There will be no show next week (5th of December) as I am on holidays, things will be back to normal the next week though.

For the remainder of the year I plan to do shows on the 12th and 19th of December then break up for the year and commence sometime in early to mid Janurary.

Also post song requests, a lot of people on IRC have been requesting stuff, im open to any sort of music whether it be a remix or something you want played then just send it to me and ill play it :P

Thanks again everyone,
Kind Regards,
Jacko

Nope, it seems to be my local host info, on the first few connects it replies that I have bad host data, and after a few auto retries I get a temp ban from the network.

Downloaded Show 1 (got from bittorrent), liked a lot!
I studied english language, and need to train some more, so that will help me to get in touch with english language (Here in Brazil is so hard to do that anyway...), understood everything you said, because the voice tone is different than north americans (that for me is hard to understand...), and you spoke slowly, helping even more...

I was at 54% too with torrent but got also the complete file. Instead of waiting to get it a second time with torrent, I have replaced the uncomplete file for the torrent, now I'm seeding :)

Since I'm the only one who seems to seed, it's rather dependent on me leaving my computer on :)

AtariRaccoon, try http://chat.efnet.org/ if all else fails.

Yes AmonX, when our website is fully operational I plan to post a full running order of each show, believe it or not I do sketch up show notes but I did not do it this week cause I was slack and went by implulse, heheh.

So if you give me around a day or so ill whip up a quick text file and post here for ones enjoyment so to speak.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks to Maxims efforts he has set up a domain redirection so you now no longer have to remember a long URL. Just visit http://radio.smspower.org or http://www.smspower.org/radio to access our website.

Sorry for the show delays everyone, well be on the air soon enough.

I just finished listening to the last show. It's certainly fun, albeit with some wacky random music occasionally. How about doing some interviews or similar?

I'll have to catch you on IRC some time and show you the Way of Replay Gain. You blew my ears out a few times there. And you need an anti-pop screen.

Yes Maxim replay gain would be great, I have a 50 dollar music shop gift voucher sitting in front of me so ill go and buy a pop filter, I have been meaning to get one for ages. On the weekend would be a good chance to catch me on IRC, perhaps around midnight to 1am should be ok for me (around late arvo for you)

Hi Jacko, thanks for doing this podcast. I enjoy listening to the shows. I am posting just to second the constructive criticism Maxim has put forth, i.e.:
1) the sound level is too varying,
2) the music may have been a bit to random in the last show (although fine that you play some music that isn't VGMs), and
3) to improve the contents you could interview someone, or pose questions to the listeners (maybe listeners can answer on the voicemail?), in order to get some debate going.
Beside these points, I'm happy with the podcast as it is!

Yes Marc, that weird music at the end was a request from AmonX,

were trying to sort out a better voice mail system, and tomorrow I will be purchasing a pop filter, so no more pronounced Ps, also I like the debate idea very much.

An interview should be too hard to organise through something like google talk, but its just a matter of who do I interview? and what sort of questions would I ask, although the listeners can help me out on that one.

Thanks everyone
Scott

Any chance of a decent naming convention for the filenames?

The "dmY" dating method is all well and good until you order the files by name - then they are horribly out of order. "Ymd" is much better for ordering. And for everything, in fact. :)

ok Aypok, that can be easily changed, but dd/mm/yy is the format we use for date in aussie land, but I can change it around throughout the day.

Computers like to see yyyy-mm-dd (including leading zeroes). An alternative would be to prefix all the files with the show number (probably best to make it 2 digits).

Oh, and Jacko, your English accent is terrible :)
