My old favourite Atari ST had a fairly productive music coder called Jochen Hippel (also on the Amiga) and I found on the Atari ST SNDH website the source code for a replay routine for the ZX Spectrum with Z80 source.

Not sure if this is a feasible project for some of the hard-core Z80 coders here as there are 2 different sound chips in use .. but if someone wants to take a look, there are plenty of example tunes on the same site.
