Needless to say, there will be a music competition to celebrate SMS Power 10th anniversary. Deadline, March, 27, 2007.
This topic shall serve as a reminder to all of you until an official announcement and a page are setup.

Start working and prepare a nice something!

Last year competition can serve as a guideline for what to expect:

Up from me this year will be possibly 3 tunes.

1 is already completed (its rather rocky) 1 is in the works (yup a jazz tune with me on my sax) and the other...... well I hope to be a PSG tune or something, I will have to muster all my musical brain power for that one.

Can't wait till the deadline.

Are we doing competition prizes like we did last year? that added a nice touch to the competition.

Also does anyone think whether the rules need revising or are we all happy with them?

Thanks All,
Scott

Does this comp. have to be anonymous ?
And does it have to be only never-released tracks ?

Or can i re-hash an old track and submit it ?

You mean as in writing your name on stuff? I use my propper name (Scott) in my music tags and stuff

Not necesarilly you can remix an existing tune, for example last year I did a alex kidd in shinobi world remix

Ooohhhh, thats a toughie. If you did this I would most definitely ask the original author of the song as he/she may not like you using their song without permission. Also if you re-hashed an old track without the sources it going to be very hard for you to make it the same.

Ok, so i probably didn´t make myself very clear, sorry for that, as for english is not my native language.

By anonymous i mean if the musicians can be known before-hand or only when the results are announced ?

If not, then, can i use an old track of mine (which will make it very clear who i am, for those who know).

And by re-hashing an old track, i mean a old track of mine. (track as in tune, not necessarily created with a tracker).

Thanks for the reply.

I think you can either remix an existing song, or if it is your own tune then you should submit it as a psg tune. Otherwise it makes it a bit irrelivant and pointless if you only submit songs of you own that don't have anything to do with sms themes...

No you submit them with who you are, that way the admins know who you are aswell.

Aaaahhhh now I know what you mean. If you do this I don't suppose it would matter but please remember to keep it themed to Master System music as this is the main aim of the game.

If its completely your own tune, it has to be on PSG (for example my song happy days, or sesame street) just so we have some idea that you are using musical features of the Master System.

If you need any more help please don't hesitate to ask, it can be daunting at first but we want everyone to be successful. :)

Maybe we could also have a category where you write lyrics to a sms tune.

Vs Dragon

Wonder boy, Wonder boy, Wonder boy, Wonder boy
Wonder boy the Dragons Trap
Wonder boy the Dragons Trap
Wonder boy, Wonder boy, Wonder boy, Wonder boy
Wonder boy the Dragons Trap
Wonder boy the Dragons Trap
Or is it Mon-ster World, Mon-ster World, Mon-ster World
Must kill the Dragon

Yes it's a lame attempt but you get the Idea.

I'm Alex Kidd!
I punch big rocks!
Punch rocks and take big bags of coins!
I've got big hands!
I've got big ears!
Guess what I've got downstaaairs!

Sometimes I ride a bike
Sometimes I punch some guys
When I play janken in Japan
Someone's gonna get na-ked*

I'm Alex Kidd!
Don't make me mad!
I'll punch you 'til you die

I would be up for making an audio recording of Heliophobes lyrics, this is possibly the best thing I have seen all year, lol.

Ok, so, if i have a pre-released song (it IS 100% according to the rules, and SMS themed), can i submit it ? Or does it have to be something completely new, made from now up to the submission deadline ?

And yes, i´ve read the rules, but the particular thing, about being all anonymous and only new songs, isn´t clear in the rules.

Anyway, count me in.
For one or probably two songs.

Does it have to be a minimum of how much seconds ? (Like 1 minute ?)

Thanks.

For 2005 competition, TET submitted three VGM songs that were previously available. I think it's ok to help increasing submissions. Not ok if the song was previously submitted to another compo.

Just going back to Heliophobes lyrics, I could call it Alex Kidd Main Theme - Heliophobes Revival Mix.

I am no good at vocals but who cares I will make a fool of myself :) I will base the song on my Jazz Club Mix omitting the sax melody line and replacing that with Heliophobes lyrics.

Heliophobe, if you don't mind I may have to make some small adjustments to the lyrics so they fit over the melodic line and allow an easier flowing style otherwise it could sound rather disjointed.

Also I just want to say to everyone that you all have under a month left to get your entries submitted, so we need to work out if any rules need adjusting, get a page up and get another flash thingy made (like Nilos one from last year, was it Nilo that made that one? I can't remember).

And one final note, good luck to everyone in the competitions, these things get better every year and if you are new to the competition have fun and I for one look forward to seeing your entry(s).

Thanks All,
Scott

Go for it.

The lyrics fit a little better with the Alex Kidd and the Enchanted Castle version of t he theme, but they're probably still a bit off.

Just want to remind everyone that the 27th is not far off, so the weekend is an ample opportunity to finish those entries!

Also is their a competition page up or something, I noticed not alot has been happening at the moment in terms of this.

Cheers Scott

I think we're doing without competition pages this year - to be honest, we can do it all just as easily through the forum anyway.

hey aypok,

If you like after the song is released, I may be able to clean it up for you, i am more than happy to do this, you know just for everyones satisfaction.

RushJet1: I can't wait to hear your entry I know its gonna kick ass.

Anyways I have to go and cram for the coding competition.

You could try, but I don't really mind. Everything I've recorded over the past six years has been really bad quality. I'm used to it. :)

I should really invest in some proper recording equipment...

Apparently most of you have submitted already (12 submissions at least).
I'll work on voting forms.

Is anyone else having trouble with Ikram and tibone's VGM entries? I'm trying to play them with WinAmp and they're sticking at '0' time elapsed. RushJet1's are playing just fine.

Edit: Might be my version of in_vgm.dll, .30. I'll try .34 and see if it helps.

I'm using Winamp 5.33 with in_vgm 0.34 on Vista, and those four tracks actually crash Winamp. I've tried running them through VGMTool as well, no luck.

i couldn't play my songs as VGMs on 0.34, but i could on 0.32, which is what i was using. .vgzs all worked though... 0.35 is working across the board.

maybe there should be some flashing link to 0.35 on the main page

As a workaround, I'll update the files/packages with VGZ instead of VGM for tibone entries.

My general consensus so far on the competition is that in my opinion some of the entries are utter crap, some ok and some damn good.

One that sticks out to me would be Ians, please I liked the song but it seemed you had no idea what you were doing and you guitar was out of tune.

Also I must admit a lot of tibones vgm works were rather boring and lack lusture, they just had no substance to them.

Aypok, your entry was actually rather cool but for me it was a little too loud and could have benefited from some different drumming styles as you progressed through the song.

So I know I am being blunt, and if I have offended you in anyway I do apollogise, but this year the entries did not really impress me all that much, and I guess as I study music I can be a little too over the top but I cant help it.

Anyway I will rate my top 3 entries now.

1. Passing Breeze (Steve, great stuff, this mix was 'music to my ears') 7
2. 2D Miracles In Hail (Good stuff Aypok, but a little rough at the edges) 6.5
3. Insurmountable (Once again brilliant vgm work RushJet) 6

number = rating out of 9

Also when are we getting the vote form up, like last year?

Insurmountable, final conflict and out somewhere definitely are gonna get my vote ! (out somewhere has the coolest chorus ever).

Jacko your Hang On is really nice but I think it's time to give credit to awesome crafted VGM stuff.

I'm holding off on comments until I can listen to them all.

Anyone submitting a piece of music into a publically judged contest should be OK with a bit of criticism. That said, specific and useful criticism is preferable - like pointing out that Ian's guitar is out of tune, for instance.
