Japanese text: update, help wanted

I've been working on this today and yesterday. I now think I have bullet-proof Unicode reading in the plugin, it's quite simple in C. I tested it with the Space Harrier VGMs from ZD - under English Win98 it displays '?' after conversion to MBCS text which Winamp understands, and under Chinese Win2000 it displays proper characters, although obviously I don't know if it's nonsensical or not.
So then I fired up some software which allows proper display of MBCS text under English Win98 ("NJStar Communicator"), and entered some gibberish in Japanese in VGMTool, and lo and behold it appeared identically in the plugin; incidentally, it also works in the currently available one too. So, I'm confused. So, can someone help me here? What I'd find really useful would be a Unicode text file with some Japanese text in it - Wordpad can do that, choose Unicode from the file type list in the Save dialogue - and a screenshot to show me how it's supposed to look. Please email me if you can help. Maxim |

The Win2000 texts are ok. 'Sega Master System' should be Japanese, thought. |

Microsoft says: "we're crap"

Microsoft's "Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems" (translation: here's a DLL which will do the Unicode stuff we already put in the SDK, we just didn't actually code it until now)
Existing A/W Functions on Windows 95/98/Me (translation: here's what actually works without this DLL, so if you want to use something not included there, you can't) Maxim |
