[Forums] Spam words mod
Posted: Sat Apr 08, 2006 9:46 pm

We have added a phpBB mod that will block posts containing certain common spam words and we'll add more as the spam comes in. Please be careful about posting spam words because you can be automatically banned if you repeatedly offend (we can always unban you, but it's annoying) - this is protection against registered bots. Naturally we will not block SMS-related words like Casino (Games).

I think I noticed this in action the other day. My post had some words changed. This is the post in question. The words "At my opinion" sound so unnatural. "At" was originally "In". Is this what caused it?

Do you think that you may be able to discreetly send users a message with all the blocked words so we know not to use them?

That's not the spam filter, it's the forum's automatic conversion of your words into Bock-speak... :) (If it's annoying/offensive I can remove it, I thought it was funny) |

Now you've explained it, I can find it funny. :) Keep it in.

Why are you always so cruel to Bock. Although In My Opinion it is very funny. Sorry Bock but can you understand the humour behind this??
And Bock over the years your english skills have improved alot. |

Currently, the spam filter doesn't actually block messages, rather it flags them and hides them until an admin can review the message and decide if it's legit or not. The forum index, however, doesn't know when a thread reply is hidden so you may see a thread listed as having a new message, but when you read the thread, no new message is displayed. This can be particularly confusing as the spambots tend to like to bump old threads.
If you see a thread that appears to have a new message that you cannot see, just ignore it, it will be corrected. Bock and Maxim may want to consider switching the spam filter from "flag post" mode to "error message" mode. |
