Brsms is still around and is still active. Massage is
supposedly under development but after 2 and a half
years, assume it's been abandoned.

Very active!

Ah well, at least BrMSX *is* being updated.
Was using it the other day, it's very good!

So stay off topic (hmm),
Any ideas of what are good games on MSX?

Good MSX Games
Post Posted: Tue Feb 22, 2000 7:30 pm
Adventure Island (Scrolling is blocky)
Circus Charlie (Very challenging)
Dig Dug
Gryzor (Contra)
Metal Gear
Nemesis (Scrolling is blocky)
Nemesis 2 (Scrolling is blocky)
Nemesis 3 (Scrolling is blocky)
Salamander
Super Mario Bros. 2 (Scrolling is blocky)
Vampire Killer

I'm not saying these games are good by today's standards,
I'm saying their good on that system. I really wanted
to get into the Nemesis games but that damn scrolling
gave me a headache. You die 90% of the time not by
enemy bullets or free floating objects, but from a
giant mountain that's in one place and suddenly on
your coordinate. Vampire Killer has 0 scrolling
and the whip sucks. The game also speeds up and slows
down depending on what's going on in the game.

I dunno why on Earth you would want to seriously play any
games on that system. The only thing I like about the
MSX is the music in the games. Nemesis 2 has some
GREAT music! I wish there was some kind of NSF or
SPC format for the sound chips used in that system.

Questionable (to be, or not to be discontinued?)

I dunno why on Earth you wanted to make a SG-1000 emulator
while the systems are 90% similar.

Funny, I bitched on a related subject (SN76489 PSG
music, like the MSX without the FM-PAC) earlier. The
idea did not go over well. At this point, however, I could
care less, and am looking at creating a player for such
music files (and if I do, I will release the file format spec).

The big thing about such file formats is to make sure that
they can be handled by real hardware (there is a hardware
NSF player, for example).

The only two games I like on the SG1000 is Congo Bongo and
H.E.R.O. Yes, everything else sucks. And Ninja Princess
(Sega Ninja) is an insult. I wanted to do it so that
way I would have a better handle on emulation (since
it's a fairly simple system), to learn the Z80 (That
son of a bitch), and to learn a bit more as to how
games work. The end result to that was I've grown
more hatred toward the Z80, I've played all the SG1000
games out on the net, and I've discovered that the
SG1000 was the predecessor to the SMS and that they
have similar hardware.

I'll come back to the whole Z80 MSX, SG1000, Coleco, SMS
hardware thingie later. For now, I'm strictly a 6502
and NES man.

The MSX-1 games werent so great, but you should give these MSX-2 games a try:
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (IT IS NOT SNAKES REVENGE!!!)
Snatcher (If you know Japanese)
SD Snatcher (Think: Overhead view, SD charachters.)
Fray
Xak 2
Xak: Tower of Gazzel
Akin (if you can *FIND* a copy floating about... Its suposed to be great.)

The MSX-1 was pretty... well.. bad. The MSX2 is a major improvement.
