Micro Machines (SMS, CodeMasters) 64 kb available
Post Posted: Mon Nov 01, 1999 1:23 pm
At the link above..

95% chances that the first 32 kb are ok.
95% chances that the third 16 kb bank is a good bank, but I cannot confirm it is the real third one.
The fourth bank is the same as the first.

Problem when dumping is that even if I write to 0x8000 to do the paging, the cartridge miss almost
all my write or interpret it badly (eg: fourth bank is in fact first bank).

Also a scan of Fantastic Dizzy cartridge is available at the same URL.

shot in the dark...

I am currently trying to get in contact with the programmer for Fantastic Dizzy on the SMS. Apparently, he no longer works for Codemasters, so is there anything in particular you need to know? (stupid question, huh?)
The chances are that I won't be able to get in contact with him/her/it, but I think it's worth a shot anyway.
I was going to pose as a person interested in programming for the SMS and was interested in how he did the mapping or whatever it is that's got you stumped.
But, as I said, the odds are stacked against my getting in contact.

I got this game working. The VRAM patterns are corrupt,
probably they come from another ROM bank which isn't in the dump.

I set up SMS Plus to do the following:

Writes to 0000/4000/8000 select the ROM page for the first three
16k banks. The data written to these addresses is masked then
inverted (e.g. data &=3, data ^= 3;) I decided to ignore the
registers at FFFC-FFFF since they seemingly aren't used.

Anyway, it writes some stuff to the screen/palette, and you can
start the game by hitting either button, and there's a little
sprite that can be moved around with the D-pad.

This game (might) work just fine once the remainder of the ROM
is dumped.

I just contacted Codemasters' customer service.
Apparently hey/she/it doesn't work there anymore, so I have asked if any of their former SMS programmers still work for them, and if not,
"where can I contact them, as I have some technical questions that only they can answer, as they used unconventional programming methods in their Master System games."
Heck, I don't even know what the programmers' names are! (can you help?)

Yes, I am an Australian, and yes, I think that you guys have an extremely good chance of winning.
Mind you, we should put up a better fight than NZ did... hehe.

Just a message to tell to the other what I told you on IRC yesterday night ;)

Basically I tried redumping the game with inverted values sent to the FCR but the game won't dump anymore. Problem is that I often change tons of stuff in the dumping program to dump new games and it cause problem to other. I'll let you know as soon as I succeed in dumping it (will probably spend time on the software next weekend)
