Missing scans

I'm often asked what scans we are looking for, to which I reply "there's too many for you to scan, just scan whatever you see we don't have". Well, after that people almost always send nothing. So I thought I'd draw up a small list. Those with complete US collections should be able to help finish off that section, at least.

Based on the lastest version of smsall.txt I made these lists of games for which we are either do not have a cover scan (W for Want) or the scan we have is not good enough (RS for ReScan). I've divided it by region too.

This list will very quickly become out of date. Please check the scans section, or contact me, before scanning.

Terminology:

"Corrner flash" - the bit at the top-left of the front cover that says things like "ACTION". Older games don't have it.
"Classic" - European re-releases with brown paper style packaging.
"Now There Are No Limits" - sometimes written next to the Sega logo on the back of the box, at the bottom.
"n languages" - some multilingual boxes have variations with different numbers of languages on them.
"White edges" - some US Gold releases have two cover variations; one has boxes around the main sections, with the usual grey gridlines inside, but pure white edges around each face of the box. The other doesn't have these white edges, and has a modified layout.
"White", "Blue" - Brazilian releases tend to have either a white background similar to US/European boxes, or a blue background with "Master System" written in large letters on the front.

OK, here we go...

Canadian releases

Apart from Hang On / Safari Hunt, are these different to the US or EU packaging?

Battle Out Run
Cyber Shinobi, The
Dynamite Dux
Hang On / Safari Hunt RS
Impossible Mission
Out Run 3-D
Power Strike
Scramble Spirits
Ultima IV

Australian releases

Again, I only want scans if they are different from other regions.
Many games have slightly different boxes with helpline numbers etc, they are wanted too, I just can't list them if I don't know about them.
Even very minor differences are also wanted, such as an extra code on the label.

Great Soccer (card) W Edit: same as EU
PGA Tour Golf RS (minor difference from EU packaging)
Olympic Gold W (Limited edition Australian version)

The Australian Great Soccer is 100% identical to the scan that's already up (which was from Raccoon Lad's "Italian" copy, I think).
I can do loads of the European ones if/when I get a chance (except Great Football - I've not submitted that already because my copy is pretty tatty).

Also, does a European 'F16 Fighting Falcon' card definitely exist? I know it's on Bock's Overseas Releases List, but I've only ever seen 'F-16 Fighter'.
Also never seen an Italian Jungle Book or Lion King.

And from what I've heard, US versions of Spider-man & Strider are just UPC stickered Euro copies like Sonic. I believe all the Canadian releases are similar - Euro copies with a unique Canadian barcode sticker.

I'm no authority on what was released anywhere, which is why I based it on Bock's list. I included some of the uncertain things, notably Italian variations, just in case, as well as US games just so I can get them flagged properly as EU+US, for official releases. I'll edit my list based on your other information.

It's also worth mentioning: barcodes are something that'll ultimately be stored in the museum database, and as such having evidence of the stickered barcodes might be useful. A lot of games were made with no barcode on the label, so it could be stickered on when wanted and vary by region, and sometimes got stickered onto the outside of the plastic instead of the label. But personally, I don't see stickers as real label variations.

I'm tempted to get rid of this list already - the only way new things are discovered is by careful examination, and someone seeing that game X is not on the list will not bother to inspect it to notice that it has more languages/Now There Are No Limits/different screenshots/no (R) on the SEGA logo/some other variation.

Fair point, but in the short-term at least, having the list will hopefully prompt a few more people to submit missing ones.

Oh, and German-only versions of Fantasy Zone and the Spy vs. Spy card also definitely exist.
I'd speculate that a few other '86/early '87 games also had German -specific versions (the German product codes go up to at least 41022, suggesting that 22 games were at least considered for release in this fashion.)

I've got the missing US scans on my to-do list, but don't expect them anytime soon.
