I think you should inform www.zophar.net about VGM and VGZ. That way I think more people will know about this and contribute with their own ripped music...

my guess is that zophar.net will not pay much attention to a new format, with only 1 player, and a few tunes to play.., but i might be wrong, but judging from their spc, nsf, and other archives, which are really huge, they wont be interest in putting togheter a small archive.. but everything has to start somewhere, right ? i guess it's up to Dave, Zoop, and Maxim (the creators of the monsters) to tell or not tell zophar.net about it.. imho is great as it is.. :).

I think you should just ask them to annouce the new format, just not to host the files (unless they want to, of course.)
Then we may get some new contributions. |

Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 21:15:08 -0700 Subject: VGM archive at Zophar's Domain? X-Mailer: Juno 4.0.11 From: DEATH ADDER Greetings, Zoop. We are going to be opening a VGM archive at Zophar's Domain. Or, rather - I am going to be opening it. :) I am writing to ask permission to host the existing VGM sets featured on SMS Power. I also would like to offer to take the section off your hands. You see, I can open (for example) a section on our server called "/vgm" and you could link to it from SMS Power. We would certainly get a good number of contributions, no doubt, and you would not have to spare the extra server space to hold them all. This is just a suggestion. If you would rather we at Zophar's rather not host the same musics your site has, that's your decision. However since we will be opening a VGM archive, I wanted to run the idea by you. After all, I could always say - "Archive originated at SMS Power." Please respond with your thoughts. Thanks. Take care. - Death Adder "You should realize the power hidden within the axe!" What do you guys think ? |

BOCK! :P
Well, it's not your permission to give really, it's the authors'. Hmm, so that's me mostly...
Well... would that be a direct link to the files? Or would it be a link to the VGM page there? Will they have the same standards for inclusion as we do? Will we get a link back? Will we be allowed to link to all their submissions? (ie. a submission there includes permission for us to use it.) What if we want to do more with the archive, eg. have direct VGZ links (bringing up the MIME audio/vgm thing again)? I'd rather see one large collection than two smaller ones; I'd also like it to have high quality standards. Maxim |

I think a collection at zophar would be bigger since many, many people visit their site.

Personnaly, i think you should take him up on the offer, although, make sure you take the "archive originated from SMSPower.org" option. It would be better to have just one collection of VGMs on one server than having two.
Thats just my opinion. |

Well,it's generally talking about the VGM archive which will definitively expand. It's grouped under the 'SMS Power' name to which everyone submit their files, so I guess it's legit for ZD to e-mail me for this. Anyway, I suppose nobody producing VGM is against spreading their files :)
No and no. They'll do their usual music ZD page, like the NSF, GYM ones, I suppose. With files on their own server.
No.
Hopefully in the text introduction.
I suppose no one making VGM would be against that. It is just a file.
I don't see a relation, but it would be a good idea anyway. Maxim, can you see if it is possible to do Javascript up to open a popup for each package, list musics and make them available on-click as VGZ ? That would be pretty cool, too. (beside having duplicate files on the server, but this is minor) To be short, I'm personnally against, and I would like ZD to link to our page for VGM stuff. But I have the feeling they won't :[
Yes. ZD guys are not SMS (Sega 8-bits) experts and surely they won't have the same quality standards as us. I'd like to point out again that controlling things is very important. That is why Shaka's package hasn't been added yet, since it has to be fixed first, etc.. No big deal (and I'm sure Shaka will understand), but a quality control process is important to get things good for everybody! If there's anything to fix, it is also reported to the creator, etc. |

I can't see your point. Anyone interested in Sega 8-bit emulation is probably using Meka and/or Dega already, and know or will know about VGM soon. Frankly, I don't feel we need to 'attract' more people. Quality's better than quantity ? I'll add a link to the VGM archive in the MEKA documentation & website soon, also. |

Clarification + 'official' answer

(Network screwed up, netscape crashed. So I'm retyping the original message)
Just a clarification, there's no critics addressed to ZD. It is just that we're a Sega 8-bit specialized site, and I'm sure we can do and handle things better than a generic site. Basically the best solution offered would be them to have their VGM archive being a link to SMS Power section. Else they of course can make their own page duplicating our files, but I don't see a point in that. With the few points I covered in the thread, do I have your support guys for an 'official' answer to ZD of this kind ? Thanks |

Apart from being able to claim it as their own content, having it match the (horrible) site design, etc...
I'd say: - it'd be nice to have ONE collection of files, to which both sites can link - it'd be nice for us to control it, and keep the crap out - but I severely doubt they'll agree to that. I would guess they would like "our" VGMs, in return for which we maybe get a link, and no more. Maybe ask Mr. Death Adder to respond to our questions/concerns. Maxim |

My thoughts

Personally I'm in favor of keeping the 'official' SMSPower collection of VGM's here, or at least the Sega 8-bit related VGM's. I seemed that the eventual focus of the VGM format would shift from being SMS/Game Gear centric to encompassing many consoles, at which point I'd say smspower should continue to be a headquarters for the Sega related musics but not for the other consoles.
I don't imagine the bandwidth drain to be terrible, though I wouldn't mind seeing some numbers on it eventually. I certainly don't think there's anything wrong with them also offering the same files as are available here, with proper credit to those who did the music capture, either, but I'd rather we manage our own collection, to ensure they are up to our own standards. |

Has anybody else here checked out Zophars' other music archives? I've only looked at the Sonic GYM logs there, and they are of pretty high quality.. Zophar.net have pretty strict guidelines on submitting GYMs, so maybe they'd have the same idea for VGMs (which doesn't roll off the tongue as nice as GYM or DYM, or even AYM... :Þ) But anyway.. as long as VGM2MID pops up sometime in the near future :-D ~unfnknblvbl |
