Nights are tough in Neo Sushi City, and hunger spares no one. Only the most hardboiled of sheeps can safely deliver sushi fast enough to save the starving inhabitants of this ravaged metropolis.
Play as Hitsuji-kun, and use your trusty grappling hook to swing through buildings and alleys, locate the sushi, and deliver it to your targets.

This is adorable and I love it. The swing controls can sometimes be a little clunky but that's about it.

I can't though get past about level...5 or so? The one where you have to go right along the top to get to one of the customers. It's crashed my SMS1 twice so far. I have video if it helps.

Yes, it is known that the game crashes on the SMS real hardware, i suspect the music driver. Though it has no problems on the Game Gear. Yes, video will be nice if you can upload it somewhere on youtube or other video hosting.

No problem. There's no reason you'd know but I make a round up video for this competition every year, deliberately using real hardware because frankly your efforts deserve that respect.

The advantage of that is, I can upload literally every second I've played this game. Will do :D

This is quite fun to play. I prefer the SMS version, because the bigger screen makes navigating the levels easier. Graphics and sound are good. The swinging mechanics are a little ropey, but that’s the same in almost all such games that aren’t Umihara Kawase. Overall, I enjoyed this entry quite a bit.

Apologies for the delay,

Crashes occur around 7 minutes and 11:50.

Cute little game had trouble getting a hang of the rope physics initially.
I feel it would be more intuitive if the rope were released when you let go of the button. it would make Spider-Man style swinging from platform to platform smoother than double tapping the button.

Favorite game this year
Post Posted: Sat Apr 06, 2024 7:31 pm
Hi MONIS GAMES - this is my favorite game in the coding compo category this year. The music is awesome - super catchy. I still have to get used to the controls on PC - I haven't had a chance to play on real HW but I think that'd be better suited. I have 2x suggestions I'd like to share: #1 the game is great in that you can repeat each level "forever" but I think simple a level select at the start of each game session [or simple ROM hack] would be great so you don't have to start at level one each time and #2. would be great to have an "unlimited time" option esp. when it takes a bit longer to get used to the controls. Otherwise - great entry - well done!

A very interesting game, and nice music and art on this port.
Congratulations to the authors and thanks to toxa for porting the engine and the game to the SMS and GG :)

i also revoke permission for publishing this entry on whatever media (physical carts, site or whatever place associated with the "sms power competition 2024") by any of the compo organizers. from this moment i consider it THIEVERY. i feel free to do that, because this entry was banned from the competition AFTER the voting for the reasons not listed in the rules, while half of the other entries fall under the same new invented rule points as well (like "forum name not match the team name" and other similar). Since this game is not the compo entry, this topic must be deleted as well.

Hello toxa,

We just saw your messages. I'm sorry you are feeling this way. The dismissal of your entry isn't mean to be arbitrary or personal, and I think most people would agree you made a nice game here, and we thank you for sharing it.

The rules are stating " Entries should be either made for this competition, or substantially different to any earlier release. This means you can’t take something you released before and enter it with minimal or no changes; "

Anecdotally, the title screen of your SMS/GG versions of Sushi Nights are saying "GBCOMPO21" and entry seems to be a port of an existing release (e.g. https://github.com/untoxa/SushiNights https://itch.io/jam/gbcompo21/rate/1216822). I think it would be reasonable to say that it does violates the intent of the rule, however accidental or unintended. Additionally it seems a little bit unclear and unstated what your contribution was to the game, since it seems to be a port of a game made by others (which is absolutely fine! but things weren't stated in your description).

What we could have done better is sending you a longer explanation and earlier. But this site and competition is manned by people with limited resources and we indeed realized it late (I wish we realized it earlier) causing the extra up-and-down. Maxim practically handled everything about the competition this year. As he was sorting out the voting data and publishing things he had to move on, hence the late bad surprise.

Please let us know if you think we made a judgment mistake and how we can do better. e.g. it's possible that the game was vastly redone or improved from original GB release but I must suggest that if it was the case it may have been better to state those differences upfront. I'm sorry it didn't go as planned for you and again thank you for your game.

May I ask that you kindly reconsider your last message? The game is nice and I think everyone would rather have more people see and play your game over time. It would be great to have it featured in Homebrew section and to have you stay in this community with no hard feelings.

Thank you.
(feel free to reach in by e-mail if you prefer to continue this conversation privately).

it was supposed to be a C-O-D-I-N-G competition. not G-A-M-E competition. not sure how to spell that more clear. and sushi nights project consist not only of the game itself (also art and music), but of the ZGB library, which has more than three hundred fucking commits to make it work on SMS/GG and dozens of commits to the GBDK-2020 (mostly to the toolchain, but the library as well). I can say, ZGB was adapted for the competition, was not released before (it is not yet released till now), and the purpose of the action was to show that you can make cool SMS/GG games with it.

AFAIK none of that was mentioned anywhere before. You submitted what from the outside looks like a GB a game port and only described its story and mechanics. I imagine if you described it as work on ZGB and GBDK library toward an upcoming release the entry would have been perceived very differently.

toxa wrote
All in all 1) you (organizers) did not bother yourself to properly organize the compo sort out the contestants and filter them 2) you (organizers) did not bother to communicate - nobody EVER asked me any questions about the entry: what it is, what the idea of the entry, can i represent MONIS GAMES, etc 3) entry was banned after the voting which i find disrespectful towards the entry AND people who voted

This is what I tried to address with my "What we could have done better is sending you a longer explanation and earlier. ..." paragraph. Indeed we are lacking resources and aren't doing close inspection of entries beforehand. It takes times to post and format entries, take missing shots, etc. we don't have resources to be doing additional detective work. I apologize that things weren't caught or discussed earlier. You are blaming us for not doing additional work requesting information about your entry when you yourself filled yourself a description form not mentioning any of what you seem to feel is important.

I cannot delete the full topic but we can delete your posts and game if you like. I find it unfortunate.

I disabled the game pages now :/

I also fixed the music result where entries 4 and 5 were swapped, thanks for reporting.

By the way the votes are counted, average for unfiltered votes would be 7.69 but we typically filter out a few things (people voting for themselves or really odd patterns) as we don't have many voters, it might be slightly lower with the filter but I don't have the sheet with me.

you see the problem: your vote was ALREADY sent to trash by maxim and company. and now, by saying "don't delete my vote" you actually refuse me in my right to revoke my entry from this bordello. so they likely say: "someone segarule don't want his vote to be removed, that's why we keep your entry and topic, and rom files, and do what we want". thank you very much, segarule.

My friend, you can undestand my point?
I appreciate your work. A worthy job. I wish you wouldn't get so upset. Bock acted like a gentleman by saying he could reconsider, depending on what is presented. He showed to be reasonable, this time. In the past, I had all my votes annulled in one year due to a misunderstanding. I was upset at the time, it's true. The following year, I presented my criteria for giving my votes in a private message to Bock. He found it severe, but didn't oppose. In the end, you can't please everyone. I won't agree 100 percent with them, and they won't agree with me. They won't like some of my things, and I won't like some of theirs. That's called coexistence.
