Nights are tough in Neo Sushi City, and hunger spares no one. Only the most hardboiled of sheeps can safely deliver sushi fast enough to save the starving inhabitants of this ravaged metropolis.
Play as Hitsuji-kun, and use your trusty grappling hook to swing through buildings and alleys, locate the sushi, and deliver it to your targets.

There is a vexing issue with starting the game on some Master System consoles, which was fixed. So, if you want to run it on the real hardware, please use this version:
SushiNights.zip (64.29 KB)

This is adorable and I love it. The swing controls can sometimes be a little clunky but that's about it.

I can't though get past about level...5 or so? The one where you have to go right along the top to get to one of the customers. It's crashed my SMS1 twice so far. I have video if it helps.

There are nine levels.

Yes, it is known that the game crashes on the SMS real hardware, i suspect the music driver. Though it has no problems on the Game Gear. Yes, video will be nice if you can upload it somewhere on youtube or other video hosting.

Sushi Nights 1.02

I found the bug on the victory screen: absolute record was saved to SRAM but not shown on screen, player achievement was displayed twice instead. Also i added black border on the SMS and refactored fades a bit. It looks more polished now, but still the SMS problem was not found yet.

No problem. There's no reason you'd know but I make a round up video for this competition every year, deliberately using real hardware because frankly your efforts deserve that respect.

The advantage of that is, I can upload literally every second I've played this game. Will do :D

Fixed grass palette for the SMS. Switch characters in the main menu.

This is quite fun to play. I prefer the SMS version, because the bigger screen makes navigating the levels easier. Graphics and sound are good. The swinging mechanics are a little ropey, but that’s the same in almost all such games that aren’t Umihara Kawase. Overall, I enjoyed this entry quite a bit.

Unfortunately, SMS version was not initially planned and appeared as a side effect, so it lacks SMS optimized assets, and compile-time conversion may not look as good as specifically SMS-designed art. But it came out far better than expected. Unfortunately, currently i don't have the real SMS hardware at home, that's why real hardware SMS bugs were not discovered and fixed before the release and there was a lot of guessing before the real reason was discovered (that was the SDCC bug and GBDK-2020 code which also replicated the exact design decision, that is now fixed on the library side, and also the issue was opened on the SDCC bug tracker). So thanks to everyone who reported the problem.

Apologies for the delay,

Crashes occur around 7 minutes and 11:50.

Cute little game had trouble getting a hang of the rope physics initially.
I feel it would be more intuitive if the rope were released when you let go of the button. it would make Spider-Man style swinging from platform to platform smoother than double tapping the button.

you just "jump off the rope" which is kind of intuitive. though, throw hook button also retrieve hook as well.

Favorite game this year
Post Posted: Sat Apr 06, 2024 7:31 pm
Hi MONIS GAMES - this is my favorite game in the coding compo category this year. The music is awesome - super catchy. I still have to get used to the controls on PC - I haven't had a chance to play on real HW but I think that'd be better suited. I have 2x suggestions I'd like to share: #1 the game is great in that you can repeat each level "forever" but I think simple a level select at the start of each game session [or simple ROM hack] would be great so you don't have to start at level one each time and #2. would be great to have an "unlimited time" option esp. when it takes a bit longer to get used to the controls. Otherwise - great entry - well done!

A very interesting game, and nice music and art on this port.
Congratulations to the authors and thanks to toxa for porting the engine and the game to the SMS and GG :)
