Sonic 2 Master System PAL only?
Posted: Wed Oct 09, 2019 5:57 pm

I've seen here on the site that Sonic 2 is listed under "PAL Only", yet I've seen videos of it running on NTSC systems and other people saying it works, while also hearing from some that it only works on PAL. Could anyone give me a definitive answer, since I'm planning on buying a copy and I live in the US. Thanks!

It was not released in the US, but it will run fine on a US (NTSC) Sega Master System. It is just the case that they didn't package it for or sell it to a US audience.

To get that tag it must also have glitches on an NTSC system.

Yeah, this is what I was referring to. I have yet to see any examples of it glitching on NTSC systems, but I'm not 100% sure if it wouldn't.

a quick test might be to get the ROM, fire that in Emulicious in NTSC (60Hz) mode and 'Emulate VDP constraint' on. Also on the debugger, you could set 'Break on invalid VDP access'.
If in the debugger you'll get a message like 'Accessing the VDP too fast' it means it's going to have glitches on NTSC.

Oh okay! This is perfect thanks :) I can fire one up and post the results on here.

Belatedly, here’s a description of the issue:
armixer24 wrote Ok I see why it's flagged that way. The game is playable but you can see that it occasionally struggles to keep the pace in 60hz, compared to 50hz. When it does lag, the top of the screen often contains CRAM dots and sometimes the rendering is not even turned on until after the sprites who keep track of the rings should be displayed. When this happens, my inputs get eaten as well so... yep. Valid tag.
