Flying hamburgers
Post Posted: Sun Mar 10, 2024 12:17 am
Hi. I'm trying to get a homebrew Game Gear game published. I'd like some feedback on the game. It's a shooting game wtih hamburgers. Touch the chicken nuggets for extra lives!

Any feedback is appreciated. I tried real backgrounds, but my game got rejected, so I put in more cartoonish backgrounds. What would you change about this?

You may remember my other two games about Hamburgers going to Switzerland, but I'm trying to make my best Game Gear game ever here and I think burgers is the way to go with it.

The game is generally quite nice. I especially like the music.

The graphics look really muddy, though. The colors all have a grey-ish tint and are quite dark and low on contrast, as if looked at through dark sunglasses. My guess is that the monitor you're creating these on has contrast and saturation dialed all the way up, so it all looks fine to you. Definitely test this on other screens (and original hardware if possible).
Objects are well-defined, but could benefit from some animation maybe. Some sort of explosion when destroying an enemy would also be nice instead of them just disappearing.

On the gameplay side, I found the first level a bit too long (only made it to the second), given that nothing much happens during it. Is there actual thought put into when enemies appear and where? It looks to me like they just randomly come on screen one after the other. In this context, some sort of formations would be cool, consisting of more than one enemy.

I find it difficult that it's hard to predict what an enemy is going to do, as all of them both exist in shooting and non-shooting varieties which look identical. Maybe give those slightly different colors?
The semi-homing bullets from the tacos and the pizza slices are pure evil and very hard to dodge. I suggest making them at least a bit slower and maybe replace them with regular aimed shots for one of the enemy types.

Are there more enemy types later in the game? I didn't get very far into stage two, and they appeared to be the same there, the only difference being the new backdrop.

I liked the boss, even though I found it a bit easy, because I could shoot all his bullets.

One last thing: You should check if you reset rank inbetween games or if it accidentally carries over. In my first game, it took a while until the pizza slices started shooting at me, but when I started a new game after losing all my lives, the shot very aggressively at me from the get-go.

Thanks for the feedback. I will check into some things.
The enemies can start bouncing up and down beginning on the fourth level, can go really fast on the seventh level, and both on level 10 and afterwards.

I changed a few things.
+ the pizza is introduced at level 4, the taco at level 7
+ the shooting pizzas and tacos are green. The shooting milkshake is strawberry.

I want to make a new enemy, the pretzel, but I don't know what it would shoot out. This pretzel would be introduced at level 11 and move randomly around.

I tried and I can't see the muddy graphics Kagesan described. I tried and failed to put in a second enemy, so that won't work. I'll work some more on this.

I put in the pretzel. It shoots potato chips at you. Here are a couple of screenshots of my game.

Worked on this some more. Changed a few things. I'd like some more feedback on how I'm doing.

Cool game!

Here's some thoughts I made while playing.

- Have multiple enemies at once, in formations as Kagesan said.
- Have enemies stay on screen and move around for a while.
- Enemies should fire more often.
- I want to fire more often, and auto-fire if button held down?
- I feel like my burger should fire ketchup.
- More saturated colours to make it feel more fun and cartoonish like you mentioned, example below.

Thanks for the feedback.
- I tried to put two enemies on the screen at once a couple of times, but it ended up with me breaking the game.
- Enemies can now move up and down beginning at level 1.
- Made it so enemies fire more.
- Right now the burger is firing French fries. Don't know how it would fire ketchup though. Make the straight line red, like a squirt?
- Changed a few colors to a couple levels.

Just so people know, I added an autofire feature, where if you hold down the button, it keeps firing. I don't know how much more space I have to keep posting builds here, but there isn't very much difference between yesterday's and today's versions (except the autofire addition).

I worked on the game's noises which were screwed up by the autofire feature I added. Let me know how I'm doing.
