Request: Sega Japanese genre icons
Post Posted: Thu Jan 07, 2010 3:13 pm
Hello everyone. Sorry to bother you with this request, but one of the admins of Sonic Retro is looking for something, and maybe someone here has them. Here is her original post:

As some of you may know, Sega placed little graphical icons on many of their Mega Drive, Mega CD and Game Gear boxes. I'm collecting them, as you can see by my signature. However, I'm having a very difficult time finding high-enough-resolution icons for these two:

Sports and strategy. Anyone know where I could get good scans of these two, or of any other genre icons I don't have?

There's a bigger Strategy on here:

The lack of decent GG box scans is a whole other problem.

Funny, they used the same icon set for VC releases: http://vc.sega.jp/lineup.html

I tried cleaning up both the scan Maxim linked to and the VC icon, but it didn't look too pretty either way. I guess I'm going to have to hold out for a better source scan.

For those who are interested, here's what I have. Free use, obviously.

I dug up a less JPEGed version of the scan. The icon is on the back too, at the same size. Here's the best I have:

Also, you missed this one:

which might just be an unofficial one for this game?

I tried to recreate it with Inkscape (even though I never tried to work with vector graphics before), it didn't turn out too bad:

I'm not really sure if it's official or not--Guardiana seems to imply that there are other titles that would have that icon, but of course it doesn't have any of the covers of those that would have it up.

Also Tom, for someone who has no experience with vectors, that looks pretty sharp. ;)

I can see a missing horizontal line near the middle of the tank, though.

About the "HOME" icon, it's indeed official:

Also, this:

All of the above taken from here.

True, probably I didn't see it. As I said this is the first time I try to draw something with vectors. I will add it later if Scarred Sun decides to use my rendition.

I had a go at normalising the levels and borders on these images, as well as recolouring them. Attached are the results.

Layered PSP files
png-yellow.zip (46.93 KB)
Unoptimised PNG in yellow.

Here's a closer picture of the HOME icon.

Gave it a try:

I used the same border and size as the other icons in the Games section.

- It seems a bit blurry...
- Can you do it with the alpha channel matching the Games section? (It's not a big deal for me to deal with it.)

That's probably my fault because I thought the first version I did was too sharp and I didn't like it so I applied a blur filter to it :|
The problem is that I didn't save the sharper version so I would need to redo it from scratch. I will, the next time I have a couple of free hours.

If you are resizing down, I recommend bilinear filtering instead of bicubic (or nearest-neighbour) to get the right sharpness.

I'm desiging a box for a Japanese Game Gear game and wondered if there's vectors of these icons?

No, I don’t think we ever had vectors, or even very high res recreations. If you can trace them that’d be great!

Alright :)

I was thinking of trying that (well, not to image trace them but rebuild them from scratch with the png as a guide on the bottom layer). I'm fairly good with illustrator (definitely not a pro, but I'm improving each day) but a few of them might be little a more work. I'll start with an easy one and see how it goes.

Little WIP. It's pretty tough since the originals are so small.

A number of recreated genre icons in svg format can be found on Sega Retro.

Attached are the genre icons from the Mega Drive Mini website. Unfortunately they're not that big, they're not 100% consistent ( see below ) and there's no edu icon.

- act-stg, adv, fig, puz, rac-spt, rpg, slg and tbl are consistent with each other.
- act and stg use slightly different hinting.
- driving is rasterized roughly 0.5% smaller.
- sports is rasterized roughly 1% smaller.

Thanks for that :)

I see the icons are (indeed) inconsistent. Like you said the MD ones are inconsistent with the GG ones and the SEGA Retro ones aren't 100% consistent with the originals either (for example the moustache on the edu one).

Bit of a shame since it would be best if there was a single standard. In that light I'm not sure it helps I'm creating yet another set.

I reckon the Sega Retro SVG's for shmup, edu and puzzle ones are the 'weakest' (for the puzzle one it's just the slightly rounded edges of the cube). The racing one looks image traced/jaggy.

The MD mini ones are a bit messy. Especially the RPG and Racing ones.

Hadn't even noticed that :-P I was referring to the fact that the Mega Drive Mini icons aren't even consistent amongst themselves .. the sports icon being the worst offender ( being slightly smaller than the rest ).

Anyway, makes you wonder how that extra "stump" ended up in the Mega Drive Mini rendition ...
