Phantasy Star 35th Anniversary retranslation update
Post Posted: Tue Dec 20, 2022 1:07 pm
It is 20th December and that means it is the Phantasy Star anniversary!

To commemorate we are today officially releasing another update to the retranslation project. New since last year:

• New languages: Spanish and German, plus a new "literal" English version
• Script updates based on better understanding of where every line is used and under what conditions
• Script and name fixes for very old errors
• Script engine now supports pronouns, and more complicated German tenses
• Quality-of-life improvements: option to equip when you buy, speed up text drawing and screen fades
• Bug fixes for the original game

Downloads in the form of IPS and BPS patches, to apply to your copy of the Japanese game, are available here:

https://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-CA (Catalan)
https://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-PT-BR (Brazilian Portuguese)
https://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-FR (French)
https://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-EN (English and Literal English)
https://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-ES (Spanish)
https://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-DE (German)

Enjoy while we wait to see what Bock has wrapped up under the Christmas tree...

Phantasy Star 2.30 retranslation glitch
Post Posted: Tue Jan 17, 2023 2:25 am
Great work with the translation, played through the whole game.

I found a graphical glitch in at least 3 of the 2.30 patched versions: the english literal, the non-literal and the brazilian portuguese. Most likely happens in the other translations as well. The sprites for two of the dezorian enemies (Dezorian and Dezorian Heads) are wrong. Tested in Bizhawk and Fusion.

Good catch - it was an error in the art table. I'm releasing a fix shortly.

Edit: it is released. Thanks for the bug report!

Thanks a lot for the quick fix! Now I have an excuse to replay the whole game once more.

Zirconium Armor - Brazillian Portuguese translation suggestion.
Post Posted: Thu Apr 13, 2023 3:22 am
Greetings.
At your discretion, I would suggest review the portuguese brazillian translation of the armor sold in Scion: Armadura de Zicórnio.
Actually, based on product manual this is called: Armadura de Zircônio.
Details on said metal on wikipedia: Zirconium
Thank you for your efforts on this magical game from my childhood.

I just want to say thank you to everyone involved in this project. I was crushed when I heard that Rieko Kodama passed away, and I found this update when I decided to replay through the series. Thanks for keeping the original Phantasy Star series alive in some way.

Have been playing through this and must say I am quite impressed.

A couple of observations I have noticed during the play-through so far:

* The text when first speaking to Master Tajim advances automatically during the first dialogue box so you miss what he says initially.

* I don't know if this can be fixed or not but waaayyy to many searchlights are dropped during the course of the game. I got into 7 or 8 battles in a cave and all of the Vampire's dropped one at one point.

Almost through it and having a great time!

I’ll check on that script issue; it’s supposed to auto-pause but maybe it’s not right. The searchlights are normal:) there’s various tables that control the drops randomly and you just get a lot sometimes.

Hi Maxim, one more thing I noticed, after you beat the game, it says "A cool gentle breeze now surrounds Baya Marlay", this should be Baya Malay.

I have included a screenshot for reference.

I think that’s a deliberate attempt to better match the Japanese name - but I’ll check for consistency.

Im sorry bothering you, but I posted a message about portuguese brazillian translation of zirconium armor in this thread almost a month ago and I wasn't answered yet. Could you please take a look at it?
Thank you very much.

It was already fixed in the source. I went back to the original translator for confirmation and then had a discussion about Zirconia vs Zirconium…

Thank you very much for you time and interest.
In fact, they are two different things:

ZircôniA refers to a jewel stone, diamont-like:
pt wikipedia org/wiki/Zirc%C3%B4nia_c%C3%BAbica

ZircôniO, as suggested, is a strong metal, more suitable to build an armor:
pt wikipedia org/wiki/Zirc%C3%B4nio

I hope you find this helpful. Please send my best regards to original translator.
Thank you again.

Indeed; but the original game has ジルコニアメイル, which is a transliteration of Zirconia Mail. That’s https://ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ジルコニア - ie the crystalline diamond-like variant of zirconium dioxide. The game has a continuum of armours made from weaker to stronger materials: leather, iron, zirconia, diamond and Laconia. The Zirconian armour is therefore a cheaper, lower quality version of the diamond armour, matching (cubic) zirconia’s place as a cheaper, lower quality gemstone than diamond in the popular view of jewellery.

(I’m also aware that the value of diamonds is quite false, and they may well have similar true value to cubic zirconia if the world was less evil.)

The next step is to discover that the naming of the various zirconium-based materials (elemental zirconium, zircon ore, zirconium dioxide, cubic zirconia) is quite variable across languages…

Yes, Im very satisfied with this answer, but to consider all possibilities, I wish to bring to discussion the original manual from brazillian PS1 with has a drawing about zirconian armor, wich was replicated and colored by pscave staff:
pscave com/ps1/items/armor.shtml
The armor doesn't seem to be crystal-like, and more metal-like.

Oh yes, Im very aware of artificially controled commodity price about mineral jewel-like diamonds, and all the consequences it brings to poorer parts of the world. So sad.

I came here do get rid of "zicórnio" on a game I like the most and found myself if a very enriching and interesting discussion.
I still vote por "Zircônio" (metal), but after your brilliant explanation, Im ok with "Zircônia" (mineral).
Thank you very much.
