[VGM packs] SG-1000 and OMV
Post Posted: Fri Mar 11, 2022 8:59 pm
Given the recent surge of interest in SG-1000 I thought I'd try to rip some of the soundtracks.

First up is 007 James Bond (as I'm working through them in alphabetical order):

https://www.smspower.org/Music/007JamesBond-SG

As far as I can tell this game has only one tune.

Some of these tracks seem like they are arrangements of more US traditional/folk/military songs. Also, it feels a lot like a Tokuhiko Uwabo arrangement, but SEGA Arcade 80's Vol. 2 lists the composer as unknown. It is using the common Sega sound engine (I guess the one BO wrote?) with $81+ memory trigger at $c200. I didn't include the "hurry up" version of the main theme as it's the same song only faster.

Bomb Jack (help needed)

Next up is Bomb Jack. This is using the common Sega music engine again, making it easy to rip without playing - but now I'm stuck on track titles because I don't know the game and it's hard to play.

I compared to the arcade soundtrack here: https://vgmrips.net/packs/pack/bomb-jack-arcade and some tracks seem to match, others don't, and the usage seems mismatched (the title screen music is the name entry music?). Can you help me label the tracks? Which should be credited to Kyohei Tsutsumi and/or Tsukasa Masuko and which are SG-1000 originals?

[link removed]

There's a "longplay" here which might help:

Tsukasa Masuko was the original composer of the Arcade game, so he should be credited for most of that title's original tracks. There seem to be two exceptions: the songs Lady Madonna (by John Lennon and Paul McCarthy of The Beatles) and Ringo no Mori no Koneko Tachi (by Kyohei Tsutsumi for the anime Mrs. Pepper Pot), which in the Arcade game make up two of the game's three BGM (and for a legal headache, presumably).

Most of the songs are loose arrangements of the arcade game's jingles, but this version's BGM sound like different songs from the Arcade version- perhaps Sega wanted to avoid legal issues?

Here's the songs labelled, based on the VGMRips track titles:

01 - Title Screen (Name Entry 2) by Tsukasa Masuko
02 - Level Start by Tsukasa Masuko
03 - BGM 1
04 - BGM 2
05 - BGM 3
06 - Game Over by Tsukasa Masuko
07 - Clear by Tsukasa Masuko
08 - Got a Power Ball by Tsukasa Masuko

Maxim wrote
(the title screen music is the name entry music?)

This kind of tripped me up as well when I was looking into the other versions of this game: it's used as the in-game BGM in the Atari ST, Commodore Amiga and Game Boy versions of the game.

Just one real music track. Again it's the Sega music engine, with the trigger at $c19f.

Sega's music engine again, trigger at $c200. This engine makes it easy to rip music but then I still have to identify the tracks...

Since we're in the mood of tying up loose ends on the SG-1000, it seems like a good time to bring the existing packs up to date.

The "recent interest" in the SG-1000 of course comes from Jeremy Parish's coverage of the library, and as that was happening more accurate release dates got uncovered for these games. There was also a CD soundtrack release in the SEGA SG-1000 30TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION, which includes official track titles (even if it boils down to specific variations of "Stage BGM" and "Stage Clear"). Valuable composer information has also come up in the past decade including in the liner notes of this album.

With all that in mind, I've gone back and updated two of the more egregious packs. There isn't too many of these, so hopefully it shouldn't be too hard from here to update the rest as well.

This took a long time to rip compared to the length of the music! The game plays SFX over the opening music, and then after disassembling and finding the music routines, I had to spend a lot of time in this horrible game to figure out what they correspond to.

It turns out it was released on CD! https://vgmdb.net/album/40306 I omitted the Home Run jingle because it is super short and barely musical.

This was one of the last games released for SG-1000, after the SMS had been released, so it has a correspondingly relatively advanced soundtrack. It's by Compile so not the Sega music engine. It's also not the same music as Lunar Ball or Lunar Pool.

This was easy to rip, it uses the Sega engine with trigger at $c302 and it's super short. It was also on the SEGA SG-1000 30TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION CD, which even gives us the title for the unused track. Sadly no composer credit, though.

Only one music track. It looks like the Sega engine but the trigger is not at the start of the music RAM - it's at $c3f9. That might mean it's an early incarnation of that engine.

Sega music engine, trigger at $c300. I had a little trouble figuring out what was going on in the game, and I have to say I'm glad I could skip through a video of someone else playing though it for nearly an hour to find out what the last music track is...

Sega music engine again.

The Sega engine seems to have been written by Tokuhiko Uwabo in about 1984, but was presumably extended many times. It is characterised by having a block of RAM for its own use, and using the first byte as a "RAM trigger" - so the game writes a value there to trigger a new tune or sound effect. Another characteristic is that this value written always has the high bit set and usually starts at $81. Conventionally, music comes first with SFX at higher values. An incomplete list of games and their trigger locations is here: https://www.smspower.org/Development/MemoryHacks

It's highly likely therefore that many games share very similar engines. It has been found in second-party games so Sega gave it out to subcontractors - and they also gave the source code to third-party GG developers later on (as they gave the full Columns source).

One thing I haven't done yet is to document it well. There are disassemblies of the variant in the Snail Maze BIOS at least. It's likely there are incompatibilities between variants over the years.

Sometimes people refer to it as "pre-SMPS", as it was probably a precursor to the "Sample Music Playback System" used by Sega.

I'm moving faster through the letters now, partly because the SG-1000 has rather too many games starting with C, and partly because the D/E/F games were mostly already ripped. I'm fairly sure Exerion contains no music.

Sega music engine with a trigger at $c300 (which seems a very common location for SG-1000 games), but with some heavy modifications for the in-game music + engine sounds which means it doesn't play elsewhere.

This is branded as a Compile game but its music engine is not the same as the earlier Compile packs I ripped. It's also described on the internet as the first game Kotaro Hayashida worked on at Sega, which seems odd.

A very short soundtrack, nearly half of which is unused in the game. I hacked it to always give me a perfect score and played through to stage 50 before getting tired, without ever hearing it. It sounds like an ending jingle, but I think the game has no end.

Couple of pack updates:

Pitfall II - Added info on the original composers for some of the tracks.

Hang On II - Composer information from the SG-1000 album, albeit they're in reference to the Mark III Hang-On. The two have nearly identical soundtracks though, so I'm just gonna assume they have the same credits.

(Since I brought it up, I'll also include a pack update for Mark III/SMS Hang-On as well. It contains that hidden track when played on a SG-1000 so let's just say it counts.)

As a pleasant relief, here's the longest SG-1000 soundtrack seen so far. There's some ambiguity as to who wrote it - some of the music seems to be the same as other versions; someone edited the Wikipedia page for Rock n' Bolt to say Compile made the SG-1000 version, but they never claimed that on their website back when it listed their other SG-1000 works.

This looks like a Sega engine but unusually the trigger is far away from the rest of the engine RAM ($c009 vs $c280). Most tracks are played when you quit a level (hold 1+2), and you get a threatening message from the warehouse boss. I did my best to transcribe and translate these but errors are likely.
