GG or Buster Fight move commands in Masters of Combat(SMS)
Post Posted: Wed Sep 02, 2020 9:22 pm
I doubt this will get much attention, but I'll post it here.

So there's this Master System Fighting game called Masters of Combat, but as everyone notes the special move inputs are very difficult and involved to pull off compared to most fighting games.

However there was a GameGear port of the game in Japan called Buster Fight which used more traditional fighting game move inputs that were much easier to pull off.

How hard would it be to hack Masters of Combat to have the same special move inputs as Buster Fight?

On a related note, are there any places where you can commission rom hacks or cheat device codes?

It is very dependent on how the game works. Changing the button sequences themselves might be relatively simple but changing the button sequence reading code to be more friendly would be rather harder. In either case, it’s a matter of disassembling the game to understand the way it works to be able to change anything, which is probably quite a few hours’ work.

Being such a niche interest, there isn’t really a market for commissioning things like this. I suppose romhacking.net is the most likely place to find someone to help.

To elaborate, the SMS version you have to press UP/AWAY(Diagonal Up Away), DOWN/AWAY(Diagonal down away) and DOWN/TOWARDS(Diagonal Down Towards) just do one of the special moves. In the game gear version, you simply have to press the much more, AWAY, DOWN and TOWARDS motions.

I'd say its less response and so much being the sheer movement is too much for a SMS game. If nothing else, a english translation for Buster Fight, the GameGear Version, could be done.

Is there anyway to commission anyone to find Action replay or Game Genie codes at least?

It might be easy to hack out the diagonals, but there’s no way to be sure.

I don’t know of anywhere that specifically does cheat code commissions, but maybe if you post a request with some payment info someone might take you up on it. I have no idea what works be a reasonable rate, finding a PAR code might take between 1 and 100 minutes depending on various factors.

Would porting the gamegear version of the game to Master System be easier?

The actual game is well thought from everything I read with all complaints going to SMS movement commands being too long.

One review

So there might be some interest in this.

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind.

I had a look at the code and found the move inputs. I could patch it so that moves can be easily performed using Down/Left+1, Down/Right+1, Up/Right+1, Up/Left+1

I think so? Or at least link them?

Here's the movelist for Buster Combat if you want it?

I guess there is no problem, there are some examples posting patch files.

For instance:

Hopefully the patch works. Although by assigning special moves to a diagonal direction and button 1, it may mean that some standard moves can no longer be used.

Amazing Ian!!, I have just tried your patch on real hardware, this time in a Megadrive 2 Pal with a SMS controller and flashcart.

I could beat the game in easy in my first try.

In my opinion your patch works so awsome!!, I played with the forth character. I am not an expert about this game, but every time I tried to do a special move it worked!, and I remember how difficult was to do special moves before.

Thank you for your work, time and effort making this patch possible.

Greetings from Spain.

If its possible to post again in this old topic, I can't seem to get the uppercut/shoryuken style moves to work with the patch.

Does anyone remember what the command was for the Shoryuken style moves, I already tried holding down and pressing up?

EDIT: I've figured out its Backwards and up to do the shoryuken uppercuts, good to know!
