Rieko Kodama has died
Post Posted: Thu Oct 27, 2022 10:12 pm
It has recently become more widely known that Rieko Kodama died earlier this year.

She was a major creative force at Sega since joining in 1984 and was lead designer for Phantasy Star, as well as working on Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Quartet, the Japanese Sonic games, leading the work on Skies of Arcadia and many more. She was credited as a leading role model for women in the video games industry.

She died in May this year but the news was not widely spread until a message in the credits for Mega Drive Mini 2 released in October. We give our respects for her great works.

I'm so sad. 58 years old is too young.

Her work in so many personally important games to me, makes me felt her loss greatly. R.I.P

She was a brilliant visual artist and game designer. An inspiration and role model to so many of us. I'm glad she was honored at the GDC in 2019 for her accomplishments. We'll miss you Phoenix Rie, RIP

Very sad and moving news.

I was lucky to be part of a video call once where she was. As a fanboy I took a souvenir shot out of it.

Some of her work for Sega 8-bit platfoms listed here:
