Help remembering the name of a side-scrolling shooter
Post Posted: Fri Aug 26, 2022 2:34 pm
Sorry for this kind of thread, but I already tried looking through the list of shooter games but couldn't find it somehow.

It's an SMS game like R-Type or Sagaia, but the first stage was in a city. I remember being very impressed with the background buildings parallax scrolling. So I'm sure the first level was in a city, and I'm sure it was on the SMS. Sadly that's pretty much all I'm sure of. Anyone?

I don't suppose you're thinking of Thunderblade? The first level there was top down of city buildings and then you had third person 3d effect flying along a road.

No, I remember Thunder Blade well from those days. It wasn't aerial assault either.

You see, I was this poor kid whose parents could only afford a famiclone at the time, this was the first time I saw a master system in action and I was very impressed with the parallax scrolling which was something usually unseen in nes games, so it's a very clear memory.

I remember a lot of games very clearly from those days, like Danan, Cyborg Hunter, Bonanza Bros, Aztec Adventure, Wonder Boy, Alien Syndrome, Ghost House, Dragon Crystal and so on and so forth and I'm 100% sure this is one of the games I also played on the SMS back then. But at the same time, it feels like I'm talking about a game that doesn't exist because I've looked everywhere and can't find it.

This was before I had access to emulators and the only other console I played back then (besides my famiclone) was my cousin's mega drive, but the only games he owned was the sega 6-pak and Sonic 3.

So I know it was an SMS game.

Forgotten Worlds? The first level is a city landscape.

Wasn't it something like Assault City of Dynamite Dux? Not really 2D shooters per se, but still.

Maybe Transbot? It's a horizontal-scrolling shooter with Parallax 🤔

It’s got to be Transbot. The parallax is one of its defining features and very memorable, and parts of the planet surface bit of the game do qualify as a city I guess.

Yeah, that's it! I had looked at transbot before but hadn't recognized it. I gave it another look today and the alien city right after the desert in the start is what I remembered. In my head the scenery was darker and there were more layers of parallax but the shapes of the city and ground are too close to what I remember for me to say it ain't it.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
