Golden Axe Warrior Hack : A little touch of Hyrule
Post Posted: Sun Jul 31, 2022 10:17 pm
Hello,

This game is initially so close to Zelda that I wondered what it could look like by bringing the copy closer to the original.

Link's enemies fit oddly well into Firewood...

There is still a lot of work to do, but I'm sure it could make many people who missed it rediscover this game (and make those who have finished it want to play it again)

Besides, I need help: Is there an easy way to replace existing music and SFX in the game?

I'm afraid it will take hours to study how the audio engine works in the debugger and I'm not familiar with the Z80 assembler...

Here is an overview of the work in progress. I'm not at a releaseable patch yet, there's still a lot to review, but it will happen.

Have a nice day !

Guy

lol that is very cool. I'm a pretty big Link's Awakening fan, awesome to see it running on for the SMS.

The usual way is to replace the music engine with PSGLib, which will require some coding and may require some ROM expansion.

Thank you for your kind messages and also to Maxim for the info on the audio. I'm afraid that this exceeds my current skills, so I'm focusing for the moment on the graphic part. But it gives me some leads to find out. Thanks.

Regarding the hack I haven't progressed as well as I would have liked in the last few days. I had a hard time understanding the rather exotic compression used by the game. After several hours I managed to modify the title screen. Here is the result.

Hello !

I have made enough progress to be able to propose for those who want to test a first version of the IPS patch to be applied to the Golden Axe Warrior ROM.

There is still work to do, but until then have fun !

Hello everyone !

A new version, I have slowly resumed the work started, so it only makes a few modifications compared to the last one. And mainly focuses on the bosses. Now the 1st boss is a Green Hinox, the Second is Dodongo and the 3rd um...an Hinox Mage? :)

It also reinstates the font from Link Awakening and adds aesthetic changes to the dungeons.

The patches will now be posted on Romhacking but I will always inform you here of major developments.

Have a good day !
