Zilog and Moto Youtube channel
Post Posted: Wed Jun 24, 2020 2:58 am
Hi all, I'm Dave, and I run the youtube channel Zilog and Moto. My goal over the next 20 years or so, is to perform a weekly video review/playthrough of every English language SMS, Genesis/MD, Sega CD and 32X title. So far, I've done 69 episodes over the last year and a half, and of those episodes, 17 have been for SMS titles.

I would like to spread the world about these videos by coming here and sharing the links when they're produced and uploaded, which would be about one per month, as I switch between the platforms.

However, I also want to respect everyone's space, and if that would be considered spamming, I obviously don't want to do that.

If the consensus is that sort of thing would be welcomed, I'll post the links for the first 17, and then update when new videos are uploaded.

Thank you for your time, and have a nice day!

-Dave

Hello Dave,
That's cool, however note that our forums software is configured in a way preventing people from posting links until they have 3 messages posted, so you may have to make a few posts (even dummy ones here are ok) in order to get past that limit. Thanks for asking.

Totally understand, and thanks for the info. I've actually done a bit of research here on certain titles previously, and I've greatly appreciated the previous help.

And just to be clear, when I say "English Language", what I mean is every game released in the US and Euro territories, plus the 10 or so Brazilian exclusives that aren't in Portuguese. I have nothing against Japanese or Portuguese, but since I can't read those languages, I don't think I'd be able to do a fair review of them. So, right now, my list is looking like:

302 Master System
790 Genesis/MD
147 Sega CD
39 32X
1278 Total Games

At 1 per week, it's going to take another 24 years or so, so it's definitely not a short term project, but I've been having fun with it so far, and I've learned a lot.

And a link for the channel in case you're interested in any of the videos for the other Sega platforms:

Hopefully you enjoy, and admittedly, if you click on the Pro Wrestling video, I know it's a bit rough, it was the first one I did for this project, and I think things have gotten better since then. The next video will probably be in about 2.5 weeks, I've got two Genesis titles to cycle through before getting back to the Master System, but I'll come back and post that when it's uploaded.

Thank you very much for the kind words. And to everyone that clicked on a video or subscribed, I really appreciate it. I'm not working on this project to be famous, it's just a hobby, and I want my collection to mean something other than just be bunch of hunks of plastic on a bookshelf.

Also thanks to the site admins for allowing me to start this thread. Now if I can just get those guys over at Sega-16 to approve my login request. :)

Hi all, again, thanks for everyone that's checked out the channel, subscribed, or just watched a video or two. I've added a new Master System review, this time for Casino Games, which I had no idea was done by Compile. Probably should have reviewed Parlor Games first as it came out previous...oh well.

Hey, I've got another Master System review up. This week, it's the Taito Arcade port of Rastan. This was an interesting one, good in places and disappointing in others.

Hi all, here's another Master System review. I'd planned on doing Asterix this week, but I had issues with my Power Base Converter, so had to delay that, and instead, pull out one that wouldn't take too long to go over, Marksman Shooting and Trap Shooting.

Hey, here's this month's Master System review. This one was actually recorded on an actual Master System (note the jailbars from Scart), due to me having issues with my Power Base Converter/Genesis (no idea what's wrong, but I think it's the Genesis, waiting on my other Genesis to get recapped).

Asterix is a great title, and if you haven't played it, you're missing out.

Hi everyone, hope your November is going well, as we get closer to Thanksgiving, well, in the US at least. Really hope that the holiday season will be a good one this year and that 2021 will be a better year for everyone. But before that time comes, I'll probably have at least one or two more reviews on the schedule.

This week, it's Astro Warrior. I was flat out amazed at how good this game is, for being a 1986 release and less than a megabit. I just can't wrap my head around how someone could look at this, and then 1942 on the NES and think, "Yeah, the NES is better." Could have used a few more stages, though.

Happy almost new year to everyone. I'm closing out 2020 on the channel with a look at another Euro Exclusive, this time the Tekmagic port of Pac-Mania. It...leaves a bit to be desired.

Perhaps we could cover a 2P game together someday, is there any Master System (or Game Gear) emulator with good netplay support?

I'm not opposed to it. I've only used emulators for the lightgun games, as I don't have a CRT anymore, so I'm not sure what kind of options Kega has, or maybe something through retroarch. Would require some experimenting.

And, with it being the beginning of the new year, here's the end of year wrap up video from Season 2. In this video, I put together my top 10 games from Season 2, and the history of the channel, and then the same thing for worst 10 games. I also give out some individual awards for the games I reviewed last year.

Note, there is some content in here that is about games from other Sega platforms, so if you're not interested in anything at all besides the Master System, I won't take offense to ignoring it. I'll be back in three weeks with my first Master System review of Season 3 (2021).

Hi all, here's most recent Master System episode of Zilog and Moto, The Ninja. The Ninja certainly isn't the best game I've ever played, but I had fun with it, and really seems like it's got a proper learning curve, that's not too easy to just walk through, and not too difficult where you'll just throw the controller and walk away.

Well, I'm back with another Master System review, this time it's the someone unique release for Monopoly. Or Mono Poly as the label indicates. :)

This replicates the game of Monopoly well, but the graphics and sound are a bit lacking. Impressed with the battery backup, though.

Hi all, here's another review, and this time it's another title that missed the United States, Tom and Jerry: The Movie. There was technically a Game Gear version that did get released in the United States, but it's got some pretty significant differences.

I really wanted to like this game, but it's definitely got some length and control issues. In fact, it's so short, this review actually has a full playthrough of the game included.

Growing up, I always liked Kung Fu Master in the arcades. It was a simple game, but that's okay. Sega, of course, couldn't get a port of it on the Master System, so they created their own. Kung Fu Kid takes relatively simple concept of Kung Fu Master, and adds projectiles, a bunch of varied bosses, and wall jumping!

Hello everyone, hopefully the last month has been good to everyone. This time around, I looked at the US Exclusive* version of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, which is definitely an interesting release, probably only coming about due to Tonka doing distribution for Sega during that period, Tonka owning Parker Brothers at the time, and Parker Brothers licensing the title from Broderbund.

Then, of course there's the Brazilian version that came out 6 years later, but who knows if that was even legal? :)

Curiously enough, one copy of this game end up on my town in Spain at begining of the 90's, and a friend of mine bought it. We were really freaked as it was a game not listed in the catalogs.

That's interesting, because I got in a discussion with people on twitter about this after posting it, and apparently some copies did make their way to the UK at least, but not officially. I assume that maybe your friend got one of those.

Well, I ended up going on break to help my friend move, so I've been away from the Master System a little longer than normal, but I'm back. This week, it's the Light Phaser game Rescue Mission, a game that I had no idea what a lightgun game before I picked it out. Was still a very enjoyable time, though.

Well, it's Master System time again. Had some interesting experiences with just getting Bomber Raid to work this week. I know it has issues with non Master System controllers, but I couldn't get it to work on my Genesis with PBC either. Had to go totally OG Master System for this one. Made me realize I really need to pick up a SG Commander or Honey Bee. Apologies for the Jailbars as my Master System is totally stock, and no RGB Bypass.

Hi Dave,
Hope you're doing well,
Just wanted to let you know I dig your vids, Bomber Raid was my second or third SMS game, which was great because at the time me and a buddy were playing the heck out of a game called Sky Shark in the arcade.

Take it EZ & best regards

Thank you! I remember seeing Sky Shark, but I can't remember if I played it or not. I do enjoy a good shooter though, just not those Bullet Hell types, that's a bit much for me.

Hopefully you'll enjoy this one, I didn't end up giving it the highest rating due to it's ridiculous difficulty, but I did have fun playing it this week.

Okay, so, time for another trip to the Master System, and this time, it's a Holiday appropriate game in Ghost House, an early Sega Card release that features arcade action and platforming. It's a good concept, but I feel like it's definitely got a few issues that could have been improved, despite the format.

I haven't done a Master System review in a bit, since I'm trying to balance the catalog out with the other consoles, but it's that time again. This time, I decided to go the Light Phaser route again, and take a look at Gangster Town, and I must say, it was a very pleasant experience. Yeah, it's an earlier title, but there's some good action here.

So, I was originally going to review Trivial Pursuit in this spot, and then I realized that I'd forgotten to get a copy of it! That's been resolved, thankfully, and I'll review that as my next Master System review. In the meantime, I thought I'd go back to the Great Sports series, and take a look at Great Volleyball. It's...not so great.

You know what I appreciate? When someone ports a game to a different platform, and it does exactly what you expect of it, plus a few bells and whistles. Doesn't try to reinvent things, doesn't try to make things hip or cool, just a game that does a solid job of being what it's supposed to be.

Yeah, games with "great" in their names is a red flag.

Just like countries with "republic ", "popular", "democratic" or any combination of those. :D

Well, I previously reviewed Back to the Future II, so now it's only appropriate that I review Back to the Future III as well.

Someone should go back and homebrew a Back to the Future, to have the whole trilogy. Can't be any worse than these official games. ;)

A lot of Master System games in the schedule right now, I guess I must have reviewed a lot of Genesis games that also appeared on the Master System in a short amount of time previously. This week, it's Forgotten Worlds, a game that I think was handled very well from a graphics standpoint, but not so much on the music.

Big video this week, as I look at one of the "grails" for the Master System, and compare it to it's alternate versions. I'm glad I did this video, because I had been under the impression that George Foreman's KO Boxing was the same game as Buster Douglas/Heavyweight Champ, but it actually has some significant differences, that I think are somewhat ignored.

Previously, on the channel, I took a look at KLAX for the Genesis, which was fine, assuming you like KLAX. This time around, I looked at KLAX for the Master System to see how it would compare...and it's not good. I understand it's "just a puzzle game", but I really feel like Tengen put have put some more QC into this one.

Hey all, I know I haven't posted any Master System reviews recently, but I am still doing them, the schedule just hasn't lined up for a bit. But, here's a new one.

This week I had the pleasure of playing the port of Cool Spot, and it's fantastic. I still have no idea how they fit all this into 2 Megabits.

I previously reviewed the Genesis version of Andre Agassi Tennis, and it wasn't good. But despite that, I looked at the Master System version, and I was impressed by the graphics...even though the rest of the game was still somewhat lame.
