Teddy Boy, ® variant
Post Posted: Thu Dec 31, 2020 12:54 pm
Afternoon,

I've been on a fact-finding mission and I figured the Sega 8-bit experts are better placed to help:

https://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?posts/974527/

tl;dr - in the US, the initial batch of Sega Master System games pre-date the slogan "Now, there are no limits." becoming a registered trademark. That means everything from 1986 has this phrase marked with ℠, and almost(?) everything from 1987 has ®.

I'm led to believe the entire US 1986 product lineup was reprinted in 1987, so there are both ℠ and ® variants of the earliest Master System games. And I've found photographic evidence to support this... for everything except Teddy Boy (on card).

There are claims that a "Now, there are no limits®" Teddy Boy variant exists, but it would be nice to have proof - it's the only one I can't account for (that and the Light Phaser, though that's a bit of a faff). There are no copies on ebay right now and nobody has either scanned it or taken a picture - does it exist? Does anyone here have it?

For what it's worth, here's a list of games I can confirm have both variants:

Action Fighter
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Astro Warrior
Black Belt
Choplifter
F-16 Flying Falcon (card)
Fantasy Zone
Ghost House (card)
Great Baseball
Great Ice Hockey
Hang-On / Astro Warrior
Hang-On / Safari Hunt
Marksman Shooting & Trap Shooting
My Hero (card)
The Ninja
Rambo: Fire Blood Part II
Pro Wrestling
Space Harrier
Super Tennis (card)
TransBot (card)
World Grand Prix

We are tracking this in our scans' metadata:

- US scans with "Now there are no limits" and SM: https://www.smspower.org/Scans/Index?action=search&q=group%3Dscans+%24%3AReg...
- Scans with "Now there are no limits" and no SM (implying an (R) or nothing): https://www.smspower.org/Scans/Index?action=search&q=group%3Dscans+%24%3AReg...

Indeed no Teddy Boy in the latter list, although there is a European version.

Our scans are pretty complete and we have been looking for these variants for many years. It doesn't mean it doesn't exist though...

Rupert/James has a good list going, specific to PAL/Euro releases but it does cover US card games i believe https://shinobiman.proboards.com/thread/10465/1986-1990-european-variations-need...

Barney also has this

I had recently attempted to document all of the cover versions. Besides SM and R versions, there are places of manufacturing that are different. The types are:

No Limits SM (Made in Japan)
No Limits SM (Made in Taiwan)
No Limits R (Made in Japan)
No Limits R (Made in Taiwan)
No Limits R (Made in Hong Kong)
No Limits R (Made in China)
No Limits R (Made in China label)

I have not made a list per-se, but all of the ones I found (I looked up every original box type on Ebay) and put them all into here:
https://vgcollect.com/browse/segamastersystem/

For Teddy Boy, the only No Limits R that exists is the EU releases. Even the US cover that was imported to Germany has the No Limits SM cover.
