Japanese SMS question: Will I need a transformer?
Post Posted: Sun Oct 03, 2021 6:55 pm
Hello. I purchased a Japanese SMS (not Mark III) online because I wanted the built-in FM Sound Unit, and am currently waiting for it to arrive. I live in Brazil though, so do I need a transformer to make it work here, or will it work fine right off the bat?

Power supply in Japan is 100v and has both 50hz or 60hz depending on the area.

Google suggests Brazil is 127v at 60hz. The voltage might be a little bit high for a power adapter designed for 100v. Normally +/- 10% is ok, but you would be 27% high, which i would suggest avoiding.

Im not sure youll easily get a step down transformer to go from 127v to 100v.

Its probably best to use an existing master system one that you may already have. You can also use a modern replacement power adapter. Its output just needs to be 9v DC, 1A and center negative with a 2.1mm barrel jack.

In general yes, use your local AC adaptor across Sega consoles. It’s best to check the polarity just in case. 9V vs 10V doesn’t matter.

I strongly recommend using a Triad international power supply instead. They're high quality, have been tested and "approved" by the MDFourier team and have been my go-to for a few years now. FireBrandX put together a nice page showing which PSU works with each console: http://www.firebrandx.com/triads.html

That Brazilian power supply with a DIN plug looks like a great way to fry something... for most of the world, the SMS has a barrel plug for power.
