Is this "fixable" without a new board?
Post Posted: Sat Jun 12, 2021 12:43 am
Well, I guess some things only happens with some people...
I was cleaning a Master System cartridge I've got though mail and the phone ringed.
I've answered the call. It was just a few moments.
But this was enough for my dog to get the PCB and try to eat it!!
Although the dog is fine, the PCB isn't.
It got damage on a diode and a few capacitors, no big deal!
But a small part of the connector did break too.
I'm thinking about using super glue to try to fix that and then redo the tracks.
Is it the best thing I can do without getting a new PCB?
Thanks in advance.

Epoxy would be preferable but it might be too thick to get a flush finish.

Use minimal glue and clamp the pieces together so that the two surfaces are level and there's no ridges or height difference. Then you can repair the traces.

It is repairable. The question is how long it will last, because the part of the board that broke is part of the board which is pushed with force into the cartridge connector. I’m assuming it’s worth repairing to you also and not ditching?

Super glue can be used instead of epoxy.

The really good news there is plenty of surface area for the glue to give retention. When you glue it you’ll want to clamp it together. Use wax paper or baking paper or some thing similar to prevent the glue stick the clamp to the board. Broken track between the 2 pieces can be bridged and broken components like that ceramic capacitor can be replaced.

Ok.
I did put super glue on it and am waiting a while and start the track fixing.
It seems to have a small assembly defect, since there's one electrolytic capacitor that has both terminals soldered on the same pad, in different holes.

Although I found the paging IC documented, I've found nothing about this specific configuration, with 4 more ICs.
Is this configuration known?
The game should be pretty common, as it is Super Mônaco GP.

Oh, the damage looks worse in those photos than the original photos. Do you have the little missing bits or are they gone forever?

It would be a good idea to let the super glue dry for 24hr before doing anything. It should be clamped together for that time too, even with just clothes pegs or something. Hopefully it's perfectly aligned too (it's hard to tell from the blurred photos).

Regarding the extra logic chips, this has been seen before (https://www.smspower.org/forums/8052-5100SegaROMsDocumented#36786)...in multi-game cart. I don't know how common or rare it is though.

Yes, I have some missed bits.
This led me to take a visit to the vet to make sure my dog was fine.
Well, she's really fine wich means I totally don't know where are the missing parts.

I've pasted the PCB early this morning and did solder the pieces just a few moments ago.
I changed the diode and resistor for smaller ones, but I'm having a hard time finding 223 capacitors, so I didn't change them for now.
I did got some "software error" messages, but I figured out with a multimeter that I missed a few broken traces on the connector.

Well It's working fine.
Still a little dirty and needing new ceramic capacitors, but ok.
Shouldn't these be 104 capacitors?
That's nice to know I've got a 3 in 1 cartridge. :-)
The vendor sold me as a single game, maybe he didn't know too.

Thank you guys for your support.
You're great!

Well, since I have some questions unanswered, I tried to answer them myself and am sharing the results:

- This game is (was?) sold here in Brazil as "Gamebox série corridas".
- The IC has the following marks:

MPR-17628 W35
9449E7005

- The IC uses the standard 27C4001 pinout;
- The ROM CRC32 is E29FB615 and it is 524,288 bytes
- The file is composed of these games, in this order:

1 - Super Monaco GP.SMS, CRC32 55BF81A0, 262,144 bytes.
2 - Enduro Racer.SMS, CRC32 00E73541, 131,072 bytes.
3 - World Grand Prix.SMS, CRC32 7B369892 131,072 bytes.

- I tried to draw the schematics of the PCB. Probably has some mistakes but I think it's at least "readable".
I'm attaching it here, feel free to correct any errors.

Hope this can be useful.
If someone knows of a good Master System PCB database please, take this information there and let me know where the site is.

Thanks, guys!
