8-bit Sega Posters

I was inspired by a thread on another forum where the posters were creating fan-made posters of LucasArts games, and I thought it might be fun to do the same thing with old-school Sega artwork.
Of course making a poster means you need a 12 megapixel image at least, so it's taken some photoshop magic to get there, but I've gotten some pretty good results so far, and having Fantasy Zone and Wonder Boy posters on the wall makes me happy. I had my posters printed at PosterXXL, which is available in the US and throughout Europe with good prices. Their US facility tends to skew a little dark, though, so lighten the images if you use them and you're in America. I'm making this thread to share, and also to see if anyone else has any good high res art or scans to contribute. Fantasy Zone This is one of my favorite SMS covers, and while this wasn't the easiest one to work with, the end result is very crisp and detailed, and I even cleaned up some damage on the original pic. Should look excellent up to 15x20. Download full-size version Phantasy Star This is the image from the back of the Japanese box, and it's my favorite piece of PS1 art. It's also the best result I've had in terms of clarity and resolution, so you can print this one very large if you feel so inclined. Includes a version with and without a PS1 logo. Download full-size version Wonder Boy III The original concept art poster, used as the base for the diorama on the JP GG cover. Finding a large, clean version of this piece was impossible, so I had to to do a lot of retouching to get this in shape. Not quite as clean as the others, but I had it printed and it still looks just fine at 15x20. Download full-size version GG Shinobi This is my favorite piece of Shinobi art in the series. I wouldn't mind redoing this one if I could get a better scan, though. Resolution-wise, it's good though. Download full-size version Quartet Slim pickins on this one, too, but I got a clean version at an ok res and blew it up. Looks decent, and I might go in and retouch it a bit to get it the rest of the way. Download full-size version |

Hi, awesome work! I really liked the Shinobi one so wanted to see how it would look in RetroCopy :-
And it isn't Ninja without a bit of darkness Keep up the good work, are you going to be doing anymore? |

If I get good artwork to work with absolutely. |

Very nice. When you say 15x20 is this in inches?
I want to try printing some (heh - we could also use good quality prints for our vapor competition prizes?) Some other covers I would recommend: Mark III Aleste Mark III Maou Golvellius Mark III Nazca '88 Mark III R-Type (export one is also good) Mark III Ys Ultima IV ? I have higher resolution PNG for some of the Mark III boxes above. |

Ah, yes, sorry. Since dpi is the standard for print resolution it's difficult for me to think outside of inches.
I would love to give Golvellius or Aleste a shot. I'm a big Compile fan. I wonder if other sources (non-SMS boxes?) might have the art without the obstructions, though. I'm able to shop out a little text here and there, but when the whole corner is missing it gets hard. |

Here are my original scans.

I think Golvellius and R-Type are doable, but it'll involve some photoshop magic and pasting together a couple sources, so no promises.
EDIT: Some initial tinkering with Golvellius looks very promising, but it'll be a lot of work, so give me a couple days. |

This one was a real challenge. I had to Photoshop out the Japanese text and paste in the corners from other sources. Here's my attempt. If it's good enough for you, it's good enough for me, I suppose.

Great. If this isn't magic I don't know what it is. :)

Hey Bock, you wouldn't happen to have a copy of the Japanese Ghost House card you could scan at the highest res possible, would you?

The card itself? I do have one here but the scanner is at the office (no access this week) and I'm not sure it is such a great one. I'll try that in a week or so.

Well IIRC Japanese card boxes didn't have art, so the card itself would be the only real source.

These are awesome.
Have you ever done anything with the art side of the poster that came with US SMS's in the box? I have two copies hanging on the wall of my game room. Opposite sides of course. |

Which one? I could clean up those posters and shop out the folds easily, if I had a good size scan.

I don't have a scanner. On one side it shows a bunch of screenshots from the SMS launch titles...on the other side kind of a montage of several SMS characters and villains. The Space Harrier guy, Wonder Boy etc....

Here's a bad pic I found online. Useless, but maybe someone else has a good scan.

Here's a 150dpi scan of that (originally by Nop's).

I've added the full-size images as attachments (by some secret admin voodoo). The Fantasy Zone and Wonder Boy ones are not available (hence why I'm trying not to rely on megaupload to not lose them), so if they don't reappear I may need some help to get hold of them.
|

Maxim, one of them is a 404 for me, and two others are the small versions, maybe your admin voodoo went somehow wrong :( I wish you can fix them though since I can't download from that filthy place filled with ads and spyware called megaupload. |

Try them again, they seem to be working fine for me. Also, regarding the poster, I can shop out the seams, but the glare from where the paper bends is much, much harder to get rid of. For the best result, I'd need a scan where everything is pressed as flat as possible during the scan. |

I posted a little prematurely, while the real uploads were in progress. All should be well now. The Fantasy Zone one is working for me now so I'll upload it soon. Edit: Wonder Boy came to life, so it's uploading now. Edit the second: done. |
