RAINBOW ISLANDS, Color Dance Version

by BcnAbel76

Despite this is not an Alex Kidd in Miracle World hack!

Based in NES version, Taito used a recycled graphics to make MASTER SYSTEM version, getting lack to show only 3
colors by character showed, now with a massive hacking I want to present you my Color Dance version, really increasing
more colorful and attractive game.

Really Rainbow with 3 colors!!!???

BUGS:
- Removed bug to access level 8 and Good Ending

HACKING:
- Main Intro Screen
- HUD for showing Diamonds collected, now loads new colored diamonds design
- Rainbow offsets adjustments
- Palette adjustments in all levels
- ...

GRAPHICS:
- Main character design inspired in Arcade Version
- A lot of enemies getting now more colorful design
- New design for a bit of enemies inspired in Arcade Version
- Diamonds collected in 7 colors
- Rainbow
- Harry Up!
- GOAL IN!
- Endings adapted to new characters design
- ...

SOUND:
- Music enabled in Stage 5
- Sound enabled when PAUSE button is pressed

EFFORT:
- Really more that I can remember, and it applies to all sections ;)

ORIGINAL ROM TO PATCH:
- Rainbow Islands (E) [!].sms

Wonderful job BcnAbel76!! I guess this is the ultimate version of the game!

I really love this kind of hacks that improve games this way. Some SMS games really need them.

Thank you for making It possible.

Would it be possible to change music and use one closer to the arcade version?

Thankyou for comments people

Revo I tried to enhance most significant poor graphics in my opinion

daco, it would be possible, but it requieres you to compose "Over The Rainbow" theme and replace it in ROM

Good luck to all Competition Entries

Here a new comparision, take a look into characters:

Soundtrack replacement with PSGlib is relatively easy, the hardest part is probably dumping all the SFX.

Love the hack! It's amazing how nice you made it look :)

This part is nothing to do with your work, but, just about the SMS version in general:
I really miss the over the rainbow version of the music (as in c64, arcade or Japanese NES version), though. I wonder, since most of the music is the same - basically it's just the first half of the level music was re-written, if it would be possible to take the c64 sid or nes nsf and convert the music data over for the first part? Just a theory/idea.

best regards,
- dink

It’s highly unlikely you could easily make a “mechanical” music port due to the chip differences, it really needs to be arranged/tracked by someone with musical talent...

Let me tell you this, if any of you people with actual technical skills can find the location of the music data in the rom (e.g. with emulicious's black magic thing), I'll look into editing it.

Also do you have png sprites of all the enemies by any chance? This might give me the motivation to resume working on my level editor.

I agree, it would be great to replace the music with the Over the Rainbow theme.

Much more hacking would be to rewrite the music engine, make music with FM support and rip FX with PSG

I do not have PNG files about enemies or characters, I redraw directly to the ROM, you can visit the Fandom page, it was my inspiration to remake enemies similar to the Arcade version

I found a lot of information and it helped me a lot, I also learned a lot about this saga that I liked so much as a child.

Also check this Bubby and Rainbow image, it got the idea to make this hack

Sorry for the noob question but could somebody pls direct me to the original ROM used for this hack? PS: I was looking use Floating IPS or Lunar IPS if that makes any difference. PS: I did try the "standard" Alex Kidd in Miracle World ROM but that threw an error. Thanks

Awesome thanks. I always default to Alex Kidd for all the hacks but quickly realized this would be different but just wanted to confirm exactly which ROM to hack. I have this now... great job!

BcnAbel76,
I'm truly sorry I didn't realize your hack's greatness until after the voting had ended. This would have gotten a perfect 10 from me.

I came here to say, your patch coupled with Tom's Over the Rainbow patch really gave new life to this game. I'm halfway through the game now, going to try to do 1/4 a day (if time/mood permits). The diamond indicator actually being real diamonds is a nice touch :)

best regards,
- dink

Thankyou dink! It is great to me to read comments like yours. Remember to collect all 7 diamonds x stage to unlock real ending/s

About Tom's Over Rainbow patch, I have asked him in his post to integrate it with this Color Dance hack

A picture to compare indicator, I designed diamonds inspired in Arcade Version pixel x pixel, and made it a pseudo 3d effect

You're welcome :)
I like this version best because of the arcade version - It has a much harder skill to get the good ending - not only do you have to collect all little diamonds in each world to get the big diamond, but, to get the good ending you must collect all of the little diamonds in the correct order of the rainbow(!!!!). This feature of the arcade version dramatically ups the skill for levels where there aren't many enemies, and ruins part of the fun of playing it.
