Games with good endings

After discussing a bit on the chat - and without spoilers, please- what Sega 8-bit games have good endings? Many famously end with “game over” and little more. Some have a bit of story or a picture, like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Dragon Crystal, Phantasy Star - but rarely much more. Which games go a bit further and have an ending that entertains or even moves you?
The best example is (in my opinion) Wonder Boy III. There’s a great ending with great music and more than just credits. I’m also partial to Psycho Fox’s slightly weird ending, DOSUCOI! Sonic 1 has a decent ending sequence, filling out the story nicely. Golvellius is pretty good too. Any other to recommend? Video links are not necessarily wanted, to avoid spoilers. |

I always found Rescue Mission to be unusually charming, especially considering the subject matter, and its ending is a fine example of that.

The few game endings that come to mind for me are:
Assault City Golden Axe They all conclude the story using text, images and ending music. They have good narrative generally too. |

The Lucky Dime Caper comes to mind as a prime example. It also features dialogues after each level.
I also personally like Slider and its unusual romance. Last but not least, Rainbow Islands has plot all over the place, not only in the ending, even more so than Lucky Dime Caper. I do provide a couple of links, so have a spoiler warning before you click them. Lucky Dime Caper (ending) Slider (ending) Rainbow Islands (complete playthrough) |

Talking about RPG's, apart from the already mentioned, I can say "Golden Axe Warrior"

For me, story text, static images and music are an "average" ending - I'm curious for games that go beyond that. However, it's a fuzzy distinction - some games may do this to a greater extent or with better polish than others.

I always loved the ending on Enduro Racer. Those words were so powerful reading it as a kid the first time I finally beat the game :)
Is the chat still at efnet #smspower or somewhere else? best regards, - dink |

Captain Silver has a really nice ending that wraps the story up nicely I think - it's really positive too.
My other favourites are: Sonic 2 (emotional with little explanation but the visuals say everything). Golden Axe (much better than the Mega Drive ending by far). Golvellius (nice twist with a happy ending that hints at a sequel that never happened unfortunately). Land of Illusion (wraps up the story and is very sweet). Taz-Mania (quite funny). Rastan (emotional and moving with some quite grown-up themes). |

Kishin Douji Zenki for Game Gear has a pretty good ending more than text and images since Game Gear games mostly use animations for the game scenes and endings.

Nobody saying Rampage!? I love the end screens.
I like Tennis Ace, it's not much but many sports games don't give you anything but image of trophy. And you can just watch it with password ;) Slap Shot has satisfying ending music, even if the Engrish and weirdly distorted world championship trophy aren't that cool. My absolute favorite is Phantasy Star and WB3 the clear second. |
