I honestly do not know. Where were the Game Gears made?

040101856, model 2110 (no prefix, no suffix), Taiwan.

I also had a Brazilian Game Gear. I gave it to my cousin. They have no serial number or model number in the label.

B10327947, 2110-50. If the thing inside it says the truth, it was built in October 1991. Sounds plausible since I got it for my 8th birthday, in April 1992.

Thanks for the serial numbers.

How did I miss THAT?!?!?

My Game Gear is (according to the inside) from November 1991.

My cousin's Game Gear:
HGG-3210, JPN, K25041547

It came with G-LOC. I wonder if the cartridge was added by the importer or something, as the box says nothing about a bundled cartridge.

I post mine cause it's interresting. Sadly one of the number is hardly readable (probably a 7), anyway here is what i've got :

I quite believe it's one of the very firsts game gear. In fact, if you look inside, you can see that

an arrow which aims to 11 with 90 written around, which seems to imply at least the case, or perhaps the whole game gear is dated from November of 1990.

Here is a picture of the power board and the sound board.

When my mother was in singapore at the end of 1990, she asked a local boy to give her a hint of what would be a good present for videogames. He showed the newly sold "Game Gear"; I was a proud owner of the GG a lot of month before it was sold in France.

Sadly, one years after buying it, it began to have serious control problems (the up direction was kinda stuck), so i brought it to repair in a shop and now it's a franken game gear as it seems that the guy just changed the upper half of the console and just kept the back (all my games who were in japanese and had region detection were now in english). Here you can see the Main Board and the Asic.

Now, years after, the same direction problem has came back (surprising if you consider what has been done to correct it!), and this poor console have no sound and problems to keep power on after 5 minutes (everything certainly caps related, but with all the problems, i don't think it's worth fixing it), and don't even succeed in launching a game (even if sometimes i reach the copyright logo).

So it doesn't have any real value except sentimental one (and i have a working EUR GG for playing my games).

That's really cool! I think that replacing the caps will fix part of the control.
The reason I think this is the second to last post of this topic: http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14962
I'll put that serial no. in the list in a little while.
Thank you for telling me about that, your Game Gear is the oldest one I've seen. I would replace the caps. I think the button problem can be fixed, but I don't know.

My pleasure.

About recapping, well the problem came a lot before other problems related to capacitor appears and there is also the fact that i can't read any game at the moment.

Anyway, there is a small probability that a whole recapping might fix everything, so i might give a try one day, but as i am totally unable to do it myself, i have to find someone who can do it so it's not in a near future ;)

Ok. You may also want to try removing the main board and cleaning the buttons, the button pads, and the button contacts with rubbing alcohol, that may help too.

I would offer to fix it, but my Game Gear repairs don't seem to end well, and I don't want to accidentally destroy one like that.

Good luck with it!

Ok, thanks!

That one with the "302" in the serial no. is one of the first Game Gears. It was unit 10907 in the first year of production. I always like to see some of those first units.

I'll put these units in the list for you.

UP

Is there a way, reading from the rear label, to know if the GG is 1 or 2 asic?

Or at least...could you tell me which ones are surely 1 asic?

Typically the model number would be a better guide for that. I believe all non 2110 Game Gears are 1 ASIC, and the majority of pre-1993 (second number in serial being 0, 1, 2, or possibly 3) 2110 models are 2 ASIC.

Can this be added to the GG serial numbers
Post Posted: Mon Feb 20, 2017 11:29 am
I have picked up a Sega game gear that needs a recap. The serial is P20172830 and whilst I have never had a P serial number I thought I'd find out more about it ...which led me here 😊
Could this be added to the database?

Sure! I'll try to put it in the database within the hour.

Moltavia, It seems like you and dreamscape actually have units that came off the assembly line one after another!

tytytec, you have what it officially the only post 1995 Game Gear I have ever seen. There's probably an award for that.

Post Posted: Thu Aug 31, 2017 9:01 pm
Hi all! I had a question about the older game gears. Mine was from I think 1990/1991 ish serial number is B10006599 the back area by the serial number looks different than most I have seen also the screen glass is more of a sharp edge where as all the other ones I have seen have a smooth rounded edge. Any info would be awesome. Thanks!

I also have a GG with a similar serial number (B10110049) and similar styling. Missing the patent info on the back, and has the flat non-rounded screen glass.

I would assume since these serial numbers look like first-run USA models that after this run they switched the design. Now I'm kinda curious when they switched the design and how many flat screen GG's are out there.

Here's one in Canada. Got this way back for Christmas, probably '94 or '95? Had it ever since.

SN: B43003170

It's in rough shape these days... going to order some new caps and a new glass panel for it to get it up to shape. Might mod the screen too, haven't decided yet....

Anyway, dropped by just to make this post. I was actually trying to use Google to see if you can determine the motherboard version by the serial # and found this thread.

I took a couple of pics to share, but new users can't post links :(
