Castle of Illusion
Post Posted: Sun Apr 05, 2020 8:33 am
Hello,

I've finally dumped all of my cartridges and I have been surprised to see that I have two different versions of Castle of Illusion. I had no idea that it existed two versions... Do someone have an idea of the differences of these two ?

Thaks :)

Interesting! Do the cartridges look the same on the outside? Do you know which region these were each released in? And do you have any files hashes or CRC's you'd be able to compute from your dumps?

After reading this I realized I also have two dumps, but one of mine is actually from my Game Gear cartridge (it runs in the Game Gear's SMS-compatible mode) and lacks the export header checksum. It seems like the Game Gear cartridge version has a brighter color palette and switched to a simpler font, probably to make it possible to still read when scaled down onto the Game Gear screen which didn't faithfully reproduce the pixel resolution of the SMS display and instead dedicated only 2 sub-pixels (R+G, G+B, or B+R) of the Game Gear display to each SMS logical RGB pixel, with predictably atrocious results for text legibility.

Info for the two variations I have, for comparison:

SegaRetro lists four cart variants, but CRCs aren’t listed. You might want to verify that your dumps are consistent; I had a Fantasy Zone: the Maze that gave an unique checksum, but then gave another when re-dumped. The ROM on it is going bad :(

Both cartridges are from European version (One is a loose version so I'm not that sure...)
V1.0 CRC32 -> B9DB4282
V1.1 CRC32 -> 953F42E1

Until now I spotted 953f42e1 in European and Brasilian cartridges, and B9DB4282 in US cartridges, so it was assumed this was the distribution. If you are certain both of your cartridges are European we could relabel those in Meka database.

Unfortunately, I am not... Since I don't have the box I can't tell if it is a US or not... Is there a way to know it on the cartridge ? Do I need to open it ?

The label style is different, although a lot of cartridges were shipped to different regions...
