Small chat bubbles in Pyonkichi Adventure

In Pyonkichi Adventure, there are small chat bubble happening. They are using sprites encoded a list of 3-bytes struct (offset_y, offset_x, tile_no).
e.g. ピョンこちゃん。happens at the end of the first scenario (probably most scenarios). Function $6DDA lead to $6DC7 loading a value from $00 to $17 in register A then choose one of those strings to display. They are all using a shared 66 tiles (maybe 2 more available?) so the whole set of strings was designed to fit in those 66~2 tiles. If we get them translated in context then we can attempt to recreate those 24 chats bubbles with the same amount of tiles. I think we can load custom tiles for the speech bubbles, no need to squeeze into a small tileset. | |

I've been unable to work on this for a few weeks, back in action now. There is CI on the repo so you can get a built ROM (or IPS file) for any script edits.
I'm still hoping to be done in time for the website anniversary in March - so please test if you can. There's one line left untranslated in the script - the instructions for Speed Sense: ただしいスピードかんかくを もっているか、あせりやすい けいこうがないかをみるため のテストです。 はしってくるどうぶつを、 つかまえてください。 Google says:

Which I think demonstrates why we need a human here... |

I was looking at your post like, wait a minute, this was in the text I already translated... but now I see what you mean, it looks like I missed this line in the actual script file. Doh. Translation: "This will test if you have a proper sense of speed and can remain patient. Try to catch each animal as it flies by." The patient line is more literally "that you don't have a tendency to become impatient easily," but that's pretty long. Feel free to modify the wording as necessary. Part of the reason the machine translators are having such a difficult time (moreso than usual) is due to everything being in kana, which makes identifying word breaks really difficult. |

Next up is You're The Best Driver's police scenes. I think there's only these two scenarios: speeding or crashing. Can you transcribe and translate?
Edit: by some guessing, and because all but the kanji was already dumped and translated: あなたは、違反をしました。 You have committed a violation. あなたは、事故をおこしました。 You have caused an accident. げんてん <n>てん もちてん <m>てん Lost <n> points Remaining <m> points So I will patch out the Kanji and I need to rewrite the score display... |

You're The Best Driver should now be 100%. I had to write my own code to replace the points display - which turned out to be much smaller than the original by re-using code I'd already made for other games. I also had a go at the signs - it's hard to make them readable with 3x6 pixels for the fonts but I think it's pretty good.

Some of the text in Pyonkichi's Adventure is hard to make accessible as script text - it has to be baked into graphics. As such, I need to have translations... Attached are the first three parts, I'll get to the speech bubbles later. Can you confirm my attempts?
いいのかな? = Is it alright? つぎのように、しま しよう。 = Let's do it as follows つぎのようなことはやめましょう。 = Don't do the following Edit: I went with: Is it alright? Yes/No Let's do it like this Don't do it like this Edit again: I need to read the thread more, these are already above. Edit again again: now it says: Was that correct? Yes/No Let's do it like this. Let's avoid doing it like this. For the last one, I'm avoiding the imperative ("don't") and keeping the Japanesey "Let's", similar to the overall title. |

The Pyonkichi conversations are a bit tricky because "うん" is used to mean "OK" and "yes", e.g.
あそぼうよ。 Let's play. うん。 Yeah. おもしろい? Having fun? うん。 Yeah. やめようよ。 Stop it. あぶないから。 That's dangerous. うん。 Yeah So it would suit the first to be "OK", but not the rest. Note that we deliberately expanded to 1MB only to reduce the chance of eBay fake sellers producing "romhack" cartridges. It's trivial to rebuild a version that is 256KB if you understand the source... |
