Competitions 2020
Post Posted: Sun Jan 26, 2020 11:39 pm
Ultra-short rules:

The same as every year.

Slightly longer rules:

Deadline is 27th March 2020. You may choose to interpret that in any reasonable way. We expect people to submit patches/fixes in the following days, but try to get your entry submitted by March 27.

There are three main competitions: coding, hacks and music.

Coding competition

Write something that runs on a Sega 8-bit home system which isn't a hack. A game, a demo, a tool!
(See our Homebrew section for an idea of past work done by the community.)

Hacks competition

Make a hack of a game for a Sega 8-bit home system.
(See our Hacks section for an idea of past work done by the community.). GG2SMS hacks are not valid for the competition, there are too many of them. Please post them through regular non-competition means.

Music competition

Make some music that either uses the sound chip(s) from an Sega 8-bit home system, or is an arrangement of music from commercial software for that system.
(See our Music section for an idea of past work done by the community.)

Art competition

Make some art that can be shown on a Sega 8-bit system, using the limitations of VRAM/palettes/etc. It might be a tileset for a game or a static or animate screen. It need only be in the form of an image, though.

The small print

* If you have a project that don't clearly fit in the Coding/Hacks/Music/Art criteria and you think would be a good fit in the competition, please message us and we may work something out together (e.g. enter the project in Coding competition if that seems reasonable).
* Super-offensive or overly illegal content will get your entry rejected. Be nice.
* Entries should be either made for this competition, or substantially different to any earlier release. This means you can’t take something you released before and enter it with minimal or no changes; it also means you shouldn’t release it yourself elsewhere before the deadline.
* Coding entries must be in a format that works with a wide variety of emulators, i.e. raw ROM image or disk images. Tape images and wacky custom formats are no good unless you are genuinely making something related to those formats.
* Hack entries must be either in a format like for coding entries, or in the form of an IPS or BPS patch. You must give details of the original file(s) your hack is based on.
* Music entries can be in any format you like, provided it's VGM or MP3. You are welcome to also provide the same music in some other format alongside it.
* Art entries may be in any format that you can view in a normal web browser, or in the form of a runnable program as per the coding competition.

Hi everyone,

It'll be my first participation, and I'll try to submit a little GameGear game for this year's compo!

Good luck everyone, and I'm looking forward playing all the other entries!

Although last week has been hard and sad to live at home, i have to say i have opened the laptop again (something which has been impossible to me since i stopped smoking half and a year ago) and i will submit a demo of a project using surt assets which will be finished during next months (i hope).

My best wishes and force to everyone.

Eruiz, I'm eager to see your entry!

Oh and Sverx, thanks a lot for DevkitSMS - I'm discovering and learning it while making my small entry, and it's a really powerful and easy to use SDK!

My new project is still in its early stages, but hopefully I'll be able to submit a little sneak preview of what I'm working on.

I'm looking forward to trying the other entries. In times like these, small joys can lighten heavy burdens considerably, even if they only provide a bit of escapism for a couple of minutes.

I hope we get plenty of art entries. I admit I would feel quite flustered if nobody entered in that category after I pushed for it - especially after seeing that there is other incredibly talented Master System artists out there.

Also I want to see gorgeous artwork made for the SEGA 8-bit machines in general.
I wonder if there's any TMS9918 artists lurking.

Woaw, I see that some forums are already "preloaded", it's cool to see that there are already some entry submitted for each category! :)

I already submitted my game too, but I only joined an animated GIF - do you prefer that I take some static screenshots instead? (but the game does look better when it moves :p)

I'm eager to player / listen / watch all these entries!

as all the entries will be listed here, if you provide some PNGs (at native screen resolution) it'll be helpful. Also, you might choose the screenshots you prefer to show...

Thanks for the tip! I've just send some 160*144 screens (Game Gear FTW ;)) to the entry submission email adress.

@Ichigo: is any of your entries a finished version of Cimmerian? :)

No ^^

New games made for the competition !

Coded the first in few days in January and as i've got many time left, decided to code another one in March (started 28 February - Ended 26 March) ;)

Unfortunately no time left to enter the Art competition... But games have already some pixelart in them !

Cool, I'm really curious to play your two games!

Making an SMS game in a "few days"? Did you find a way to no longer need to sleep? :)

Cool, the more entries, the better!

Despite the hard times, it's going to be a great year for Sega 8-bit family!

It's the perfect way to bring some escapism to all the (retro)gamers out there...

All entries are now posted. Some of the YouTube videos have weird audio, apologies - it's surprisingly hard to record videos of emulators. The last-minute entries don't have videos yet.

Hello,

We answered you by e-mail. Your entry is an update to a hack released previously. The rules specifically request entries to new or major update, in order to make the competition only with “new contents”. I am sorry if you feel left out but why not posting it on the existing thread for the hack?

Of course that Competion is the high point for SMS fans. I would like to congratule to everybody that submitted some work (music, hack or code). But not only to participants. I would like to thanks to everybody that contribute in something for the Master System, with homebrew games, with Game Gear hacks to SMS, MSX hacks to SMS, Dev tools, Tutorials, etc.
In hard moments like a covid-19 devasting lives is necessary give kind words to all people. In specific, anyway if someone here can figure that your efforts not are seen, i can say: yes. it is worth
Congratulations for all and magnific contribution to smspower!

Hello I updated my post with my no competition entry, go to Development / Psychic World Series Hacking

Segarule thankyou great words ;) we need fight this Covid19!

Maxim, it is possible for next year 2 types hacking? 99$ entries are based in Alex Kidd engine or Tales engine, hacking rom adding saveram, megadrive pad support, inject voices, new functions, etc, is based really in coding and compress data, but really compete with a level editor I think it is not very appropriate.

Thankyou everybody for your contribution!!!!!

It's tricky, there's a continuum between just using the basic functionality in KiddEd and reverse engineering/writing code to change a game completely, and at the opposite extreme making a new game editor. Similarly it might be nice to have translations appearing too. Given the number of entries we have it's difficult to split things up too much without making it quite complicated.

Clearly KiddEd has really skewed the Hack competiton, in a good way, but also making it difficult for more regular hacks to compete. At this point KiddEd is its own authoring package, and maybe we can considering rebranding this competition as as "KiddEd Competition" ?

Maybe this would also motivate people to participate in the "regular" Hack competition? As Maxim points it is a continuum, any new upcoming tools can alter the balance of that competition and it will always be difficult for people to judge of the effort put into those hacks. In addition in the current status quo it is unlikely there would be enough entries. But we could try perhaps. Maybe if you wrote technical posts detailing some of the hacks it would help people understand the work and motivate people to create more hacks.

As for me, I would love if there were more editors like KiddEd but for other game engines.
