Examples of good, varied sound design

I'm considering writing an audio driver for SMS, but in order to design its instrument data model, I must first figure out what composers expect it to do.
MovieMovies1 in the FamiTracker Discord server called the TI DCSG (part numbers SN76489, SN76494, SN76496) a "Dirt Cheap Sound Generator." I've read complaints that because of the DCSG's limited set of timbres and utter lack of bass, all CV, SG-1000, Tandy 1000, and SMS soundtracks start sounding "samey." Is there a set of DCSG tunes that show a wide variety of sound design techniques for this chip? |

I'd say:
* Alien 3 for use of 1/16 tones * The Flash for tone drums and arps * However there's some more tricky stuff going on in the modern chiptune scene with things like simultaneous tone+1/16 (see also James Pond 2, although it sounds pretty bad), 1/16 with drums. Pretty much anything from Tomy or RushJet1. However it's not always easy to see the "source" for these. |

I'm a bit relayed in replying to this topic, but since Maxim mentioned Tomy's works, I figure it worthwhile to actually link his Bandcamp.
https://tomy.bandcamp.com/music His Master System works are listed under PSG. But the tracks can be quite incredibly experimental - alongside the Mega Drive ones, too. His style of composition can be divisive among people I've exposed it to, however. |
