TecToy Megadrive 4 dumps (including Master System games)
Post Posted: Sun Oct 22, 2017 8:23 pm
Alexandre "Tabajara" dumped the contents of an old Megadrive 4 (the one with Guitar Hero).

Page is in Portuguese, but the download links are at the end.

Some Master System fans act strange when it comes to the Mega Drive, but I don´t know why. Some of them seem to hate it.

I think it´s cool, I didn´t even know that a ´Mega Drive 4´ exists =) Nice little console.

I'm guessing there was a Brazilian "Mega Drive 3" but the only MD3 I heard of was a fairly obvious bootleg.
(as I think the Genesis 3 was North American exclusive and thus no "Mega Drive" counterpart?)

I don't understand, frankly.

Specially since that thing is LOADED with some brazilian SMS games. Most of them are running pretty fine on emulators, but some of them (like "12 trabalhos de jongo" - something like 'the twelve works of jongo') aren't.

I know the games aren't that special or anything... but they are undumped , original games... :/

For example, "Fábrica de Chocolates" (Chocolate Factory) is running pretty well, and it is a SMS game.

Now, "Os 12 Trabalhos...", also an SMS game, seems that there is some kind of corruption, apparently the sprites are showing above where they should be...?!

I don't know if the ROM was bad, if the dump was bad, or if it does something only the "Mega Drive 4" understands.

So there is actually 16 exclusive SMS rom in the Megadrive 4, all games seems to be made on years 2006 & 2007 by Tectoy Digital and Overplay.

Here the list:

- Acerte o alvo
- Bolas e Cores
- Bolhas
- Bombeiros
- Cava-Cava
- Creature Capture
- Dominó
- Fábrica de Chocolate
- Memória Master *
- Mina Terrestre
- Minerador
- Os 12 Trabalhos de Jongo *
- Palhaços
- Senha
- Sudoku
- Tangram

Both games with * launch with extended resolution, 4 rows of bad tiles display up-screen (cause displaced sprite, collision...). Other games should work fine on real hardware (warning: rom don't have any header).

For noob: to download rom on SLotman first post link, use the link named: Pra quem estiver com pressa, conteudo da ROM da placa 2 ja extraido . Extract the .rar archive. Find files ending by .bms.gz . Extract them (with 7-zip for example). Change .bms extension by .sms . Voila.

Thanks for that. I'm wondering how much we want to consider these as homebrew versus "real" games... I guess it's more legit than most of the pirate stuff from Taiwan and Korea, so we should add them as real games, but they never appeared on cartridges and some rely on some undocumented non standard behaviour.

The "corruption" seems to be because the game enables the extra height modes by mistake, presumably the console doesn't support that.

They're commercial games, IMHO (at least I wouldn't call those homebrew...)

Wow this is amazing!

(When you first posted that I ignored the details because I thought it was only Megadrive games.. I don't think anyone hates the Megadrive (I love it) but I don't have time to follow every system's dumps in detail :)

I suspect they're the same games they also included in their Master System 3 / Master System Evolution (see this)

Maybe they should be all together under a multi-game page, like Game Box Série. Considering them as homebrew wouldn't be fair, I think.

Sorry, I am not much into the systems released in Brazil. They are super cool, but the number of different released Master Systems and Mega Drives (especially the ones with built-in games) is quite high and to keep them all in mind is an art if you ask me :D To import them to Europe is too expensive as well, I never had the chance to check them out personally.

Thank you Révo! The games remember me of the 20Em1 cartridge.

I know about some guys in the Master System community. It´s strange, since both systems are from the same company^^

I think we should fix that video mode, as it makes everything broken (see how the sprites don't line up with BG...) beside the 'dirt' on top.

(Yes I don't see the point of your ZIP file Revo... it's confusing to add more patched rom into the mix. People who want to do repro can do it themselves. If we are gonna fix the emulators or patch the rom to run on hardware let's do it correctly not half assedly.)

Heh! Reading about it being an error on the display register, I "fixed" it :)
"Os 12 Trabalhos de Jongo" is now working ^_^

I do think that maybe this isn't an error - but a featured enabled in the MegaDrive 4 - which is actually an emulator of sorts. So, maybe that extended view works on it? I don't know...

Edit: removed attachment, it wasn't working, at all... :/

Ouch, false alarm.

The game is now playable, and sprites are in their correct position, but there is no hiscore and time indicators on screen :/
(Even worse: the change I made only worked on Kega... on Meka, everything is still the same)

To compare, here it is recorded from a "Master System 3 Evolution"

Maybe it does something non standard for that part of the screen - the top part looks like the standard 24 rows.

Oh, yeah!

Now its working ^_^

I don't know exactly what it did, but I removed the "scroll lock" on VDP register 0, then wrote 0x20 on register 9 and voilà!

Tested both on Meka and Kega ;)

Apparently Tectoy removed the sprite per line limitation on their megadrive 4 emulator.

Lots of times during "jongo" levels, some of the flowers plain disappear, because of the sprite limit per line. On that video I posted before (which was recorded from a "Master System Evolution") the problem doesn't occur.

It requires extra work in an emulator to implement the sprite limit. It also makes it harder to write the games.

I suppose emulators could add a new target "Master System 3+" to handle some of those changes in TecToy later chips.

Then we'd have to figure out that status display...

I expect it'll be in Emulicious shortly.

:D

But how accurated are these "hardware emulators"? Did anyone tested these newer implementations for both video and sounds (beside the lack of some original limitations)?
I don't know but I can already imagine the answer.

They are probably inaccurate compared to original hardware. But then, every official hardware revision of every system comes with minor changes/incompatibilities. If games were made and tested for them it makes senses to emulate them.
