Finding pieces-parts (specifically, SN76489 or equivelant)

Can anyone recommend a good place to get SN76489 or equevelant chips? If nessecary, I'll sacrifice an SMS to the cause, but I'd rather not (and I don't remember if the PSG is in a separate chip, or if it's in a monolithic custom IC).

A good way to get these kinds of parts are to purchase broken or
untested arcade boards from your local vendor. Case in point;
for $15 I got a board with a YM2151, two 68000's, a lot of RAM
and custom chips, and a floppy disk drive in mint condition.
I don't think the old model SMS units have a SN76489, at least
I've never seen any in scans of it (could have been hidden
under some shielding, perhaps).
I'm certain the SMS2 and Genesis have the PSG in with the VDP.
Also, the TMS9919, SN76496, and SN76477 should all be identical to the SN76489.

while not on the exact same topic; has anyone else compared the sound from the original megadrive/genesis to its sequal? i dont know if its just my unit, but the megadrive 2's audio is just so bad compared to the original. on inspecting the internals, you can see the fm chip on the original, but i guess for the sequal they decided to cut costs and use 'compatible'(crap) logic into the custom chip.

Ooh. Sounds like fun. Any ideas as to how I can find a "local vendor"?
boston.com is fucking useless, and I don't know where else to look. :-/

Check your phone book under "Amusement Devices" or "Amusement".
Sometimes they are listed along with vending machine related stuff.
You can always try some on-line businesses. Off hand I'd
advise Video Connection (www.videoconnect.com), they have
a large selection, decent prices, and a nice catalogue.
If you are looking for something more local, you can track down
events from newsgroups like rec.games.video.arcade.collecting.
Now that I think of it, you'd probably have a better chance
of getting just parts (and not boards) from the people there,
since most collectors end up doing 'do it yourself' fixes. :)
