Card redump galore

Ola! October 31st, I couldn't miss the monthly deadline and worked during the weekend to sort and label long awaited dumps. :)

First we have a curious yet awful unlicensed Korean Street Fighter clone: Jang Pung II for the Game Gear. 6 characters, 2-players mode and original background. Don't get fooled by the screenshots though: the game is barely playable and a good reminder of why we are not missing out the plethora of Asian-made Famicom unlicensed games. This cartridge is circulating with different Street Fighter II-like labels. Thanks goes to Philip, Death Adder and Nop Nop for help to make this dump available (pirate games are a mess to dump).

This is our release number 500.

And now a great news - although it won't matter to most gamers - we're done with SMS card games dumps! After finally gathering every card game in different country variations, I've been working last year in redumping them for proper sorting. As it turned out, almost all already available Japanese Mark III cards dumps were slighty incorrect. The offending dumps, released by 'Dump Masters' back in 1999, originated from Taiwan based MrLee who likely extracted them from unlicensed Game Gear compilation cartridges. The dumps here are all from original versions (9 fixed Japanese dumps, 1 new Japanese dump, 1 new US dump, 1 new European dump):

Astro Flash (JP)
F-16 Fighting Falcon (US)
Fushigi no Oshiro Pit Pot (JP)
Ghost House (JP)
Great Baseball [JP] (JP) (not the same game as US Great Baseball)
Great Soccer (EU) (not the same game as US Great Soccer)
Great Soccer (JP) (not the same game as US Great Soccer)
Satellite 7 (JP)
Seishun Scandal (JP)
Spy vs Spy (JP)
Teddy Boy Blues (JP)
Teddy Boy Blues (JP) (prototype cartridge containing EP-MyCard related information)

For reference purposes, below is a list of all correct card games dumps and associated countries. Please make sure to get them and eradicate the hacks.

- c795182d Astro Flash (JP)  *FIXED*
- 655fb1f4 Bank Panic (EU,DE)
- 9d549e08 Comical Machine Gun Joe (JP)
- eaebf323 F-16 Fighter (US,EU,DE)
- 7ce06fce F-16 Fighting Falcon (JP)
- 184c23b7 F-16 Fighting Falcon (US) *NEW*
- e6795c53 Fushigi no Oshiro Pit Pot (JP)  *FIXED*
- f1f8ff2d Ghost House (US,EU,BR)
- c0f3ce7e Ghost House (JP)  *FIXED*
- 89e98a7c Great Baseball [JP] (JP)  *FIXED*
- 0ed170c9 Great Soccer (EU) *NEW*
- 2d7fd7ef Great Soccer (JP)  *FIXED*
- 95cbf3dd Great Tennis / Super Tennis (JP)
- 071b045e Hang On (EU,AU,BR)
- 5c01adf9 Hang On (JP)
- 62f0c23d My Hero (US,EU,PT) / Gang's Fighter (BR)
- 16249e19 Satellite 7 (JP)  *FIXED*
- f0ba2bc6 Seishun Scandal (JP)  *FIXED*
- 78d7faab Spy vs Spy (US,EU,DE,BR)
- d41b9a08 Spy vs Spy (JP)  *FIXED*
- 914514e3 Super Tennis (US,EU,DE)
- 2728faa3 Teddy Boy (US,EU,BR)
- 316727dd Teddy Boy Blues (JP)  *FIXED*
- d7508041 Teddy Boy Blues [Ep-MyCard] (JP) *NEW*
- 4bc42857 TransBot (US,EU,DE) / Nuclear Creature (BR)
- 315917d4 Woody Pop - Shinjinrui no Block Kuzushi (JP)

TO BE CLEAR: Existing (old) dumps released in 1999 are playable but technically incorrect. They are hacked dumps featuring an export-style header, sometimes additionnal support code (eg: to switch back to a menu in a pirate compilation cartridge) or removed credits (eg: Great Soccer had MarkIII and Sega text blanked out). Legit game data that sometimes contains name or messages left by programmers were often overwritten, etc. The new dump released today are all clean.

Additionnally, I've updated MEKA database and you may want to download it to have the newest card dumps recognized. Old dumps are now marked as Hacks in MEKA.

This makes 512 releases in total. A round number. Preservation goes on. Thank you all.

Very big thanks! What a nice Halloween-gift.

If it is a relieve to you - my 2 *fixed* dumps I told you about some time ago (Spy vs Spy and Seishun Scandal) match the now officially released versions as expected.

Just a question remaining: Was it intentional that "Great Tennis/Super Tennis" was not released now together with the others? It is not fixed and not a new dump but it was never released to the public so it might be you just missed this one?

Good catch. I *forgot* about this one, sorry. I thought it was released already. :(
Will release it ASAP.

@Bock

Thanks for clearing that up.

Another question: In the list you posted around 1.5 years ago you had F-16 Fighting Falcon (US) marked as a display unit card - now as the "official" release. Can you shed a bit more light on this please?

F-16 Fighting Falcon US display-unit card (4005A / 8720 Y00) 184c23b7 8B5072C94E9DBB44

And 2nd you had another display-unit dump - Spy vs Spy:

- SMS b87e1b2b 83A4D6495B81DD01 Spy vs Spy (256 kb) US display-unit cart, same as retail with page 2-7 full of 0xff and 8-15 full of 0xb0

While it was easy to reconstruct this one it surprises me that is is not mentioned in the recent news. Thanks in advance!

The first time I got this dump was from a display-unit card. I later found out about 2 retail US variations, one being this one.

This one is pointless, there's no additionnal data. The 0xFF/0xB0 are unused and just part of the storage EPROM.

Is there a new mapper for the Korean game?
It seems to write a lot to 0x8000, does it work like the other Korean game or is it more like the Codemasters mapper?

Yes it's the same mapper as Dodgeball King. $8000 to set frame 2.

It was a Japanese system which was developed but never got officially released, where you'd be able to buy blank EPROM-based MyCards (Sega Cards) and take them to shop kiosks where, for a charge, you could have them programmed with new games. This might have been some kind of alternative to the Famicom's FDS for games, which would have the benefit of having zero loading times. I'd guess they shelved it because of lack of demand, as well as technical problems with protecting the EPROMs from erasure (ie. protection from sunlight) while also making them easily and quickly erasable (erasing EPROMs is not easy to do in less than 5 minutes, I think).

Challenge accepted 😁

It took all of my patience, a good share of button mashing, and an even bigger share of savestates, but... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0Ualg3uJ_A. Yeah, it's that bad 😁

Now I don't want to touch that game ever again 😁

I also like to use this emoji for no reason at all 😁😁
