It seems quite unknown how many German versions of games there are... they seem to date from early in the SMS years, perhaps only up to 1987. Sega distributed through local companies in European countries, using standardised packaging, so why was Germany different? Maybe some legal requirement? Is there anything similar on other systems?

I've got a couple of german-only games and some of them have the "ariola" sticker.
Also, some of the games say "the sega card" (or cartidge) and others say "die sega card". Very strange indeed.

Isn't (wasn't?) there some legislation about the colour of blood in games in Germany? That's the only reason I can think of (or have seen) different versions of games for that country. According to Wikipedia,
Quote
This of course dramatically impacts sales, so most video game companies selling games into Germany elect to create a special German version that narrowly avoids the index by changing the graphics. Instead of red blood coming out of a wound, green blood is shown, implying that aliens are being killed and not humans; or gears and springs are shown coming out of the wound, implying that the victims are robots.

Of course, I have no idea if the games predate this legislation or if this affects the different releases for Germany in the slightest. :-p

Well, in the case of master system games, I doubt that blood has something to do with specific releases ^^
Weren't some games released in italy with an italian only booklet?

Here's all the German releases I'm aware of:

41003 TransBot (card)
41005 F-16 Fighter (card)
41006 World Grand Prix
41007 Black Belt
41008 Action Fighter
41010 Super Tennis (card)
41011 Astro Warrior/Pit-Pot
41013 Alex Kidd in Miracle World
41018 Great Soccer (card)
41021 Spy vs. Spy (card)
41022 Bank Panic (card)
? Choplifter
? Fantasy Zone

Anyone know of any others? There were also a couple of titles like the Great Soccer cart & F-16 Fighting Falcon where US copies were distributed with a German-only manual.

And yeah, there seem to be a few equally-early titles with Italian manuals, though they just have a standard European cover.

German Fantasy Zone would be a pretty great name for an adult website.

I've seen an italian secret command once, I'll send a couple of mails to german ebayers to see if their game has an instruction manual or a "spielanweisung" :D

I have renamed the topic because I found these:

Two booklets but the box says "Die Mega Cartidge", pretty strange.

This one only said "the mega cartidge" but seems to have a black and white german booklet (like the rpg)

If you got them second hand, somebody might have mixed up the booklets inside.

Just received some games, so I can update anagrama's list:
41001 Choplifter
41002 Fantasy Zone
41003 TransBot (card)
41004 My hero (card)
41005 F-16 Fighter (card)
41006 World Grand Prix
41007 Black Belt
41008 Action Fighter
41009 Pro Wrestling
41010 Super Tennis (card)
41011 Astro Warrior/Pit-Pot
41012 The Ninja
41013 Alex Kidd in Miracle World
41018 Great Soccer (card)
41021 Spy vs. Spy (card)
41022 Bank Panic (card)

If there is any kind of logic, means there should be at least 22 german releases.

Swedish
Post Posted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 11:14 am
I got a Swedish (and an English) instruction-booklet with my copy of Spellcaster back in the days. It says "Dennis Bergström Elektronik AB" at the back off the booklet so I guess they translated it.

Is this known? The box is still in English so I guess there's no difference besides the extra manual.

*edit*
oh and sorry for being sort of off-topic, but I didn't think this was worth starting a new thread for.

Spine number: 41004

As for the swedish manual that isnt too unusual, Ive seen a few localy printed manuals before, seems like most smaller european countries did so.

Looking at the other 1986/7 releases, I'd say these are likely candidates:

Ghost House (card)
Teddy Boy (card)
The Ninja
Marksman Shoting/Trap Shooting/Safari Hunt
Wonder Boy

and maybe the 'Great xxx' sports games.

Dennis Bergström was Sega's agent before Brio/Playmix.

I'm bidding on a German-covered Lion king right now. Will submit a scan sometime in the distant future.

Yep, it arrived long time go.
Box multilanguage.
Instruction manual, dirt black and white german only (similar to the rpg's one)
But still investigating for the "great xxx" series.

What game is it from? Don't be afraid of linking to the sega8bit forums, it makes life easier for those of us who don't follow them so closely.

does golden axe warrior have an official german version, or is the one "findable" in the net just a romhack? because it doesn't seem to be a hack.

It's a hack, same as the Spanish, French and three Brazilian Portuguese ones.

mini update -

I have spent the last few hours updating my collection list with notes. I have noticed that I have a Great Volleyball with an Ariolasoft sticker similer to the one shown above (from Quartet) - this has part number 41027 (The insert is standerd Euro multi-language)

Just found this one on ebay: an english only box of choplifter but with a german barcode price and more importantly a german only black and white manual. Wondering if it's a pre ariolasoft versions release ?

I think I'm right in saying that Ariolosoft imported lots of North American overstock and produced their own black and white German manuals to go with them (The yellow sticker on the box says something like "With German manual").
