New VGM Files coming soon 2: the return
Post Posted: Wed Mar 26, 2003 12:51 am
Well, I have a lot to write here...

1) I'm working on these new complete soundtracks (1 by 1 of course):
Land of Illusion (seems like no one did it yet...)
Lucky Dime Caper
Wonder Boy
well, Land of Illusion and Wonder Boy were fairly easy to dump and to find good names for the stages, but that's not what I could see in Lucky Dime Caper... I'm having problems naming the tracks.... so, if anyone can help me, I really appreciate it...

2) I'm using that code to freeze the game and get the music without any SFX, but I can't find any secret/hidden/unreleased musics, so I can't say what I'm doing is really complete... if anyone is up to search for a secret/hidden/unreleased music and complete a soundtrack I did, hm..... just do it ^^

3) What is a FM soundtrack? I really don't know...

4) I know there is something else..... but ..... hm.... later ^^

Thanks in advance for any help! ^_^

The stages are:

The Northern Woods
The Great American Forest
The Andes Mountains
The Tropical Isles
The Pyramids
The South Pole
Magica's Castle

The manual doesn't give useful names for anything else.

Well, the ultimate plan is to hack *every* game to check for this. At best, a game hack takes about an hour, and it's not the most exciting thing.

Japanese SMSs had an extra higher-quality sound chip and many Japanese-made games have music in both regular PSG format and also in FM format. In Meka, turn on FM emulation in the Sound menu and then load a Japanese game, eg. Thunderblade, Wonder Boy III, and a lot more.

However, FM trimming is not perfect in the current release of VGMTool. In particular, it very often screws up the percussion channels. As a result, I am officially recommending that anyone ripping FM music keeps a copy of the original VGM logs and a note of the trimming offsets in a text file; so when I get it figured out (one day) it will be easy to re-trim them.

That would require advanced hacking but once you get into it, it can be much more efficient to hack the game. Try to read the different available documentations about that and see if you can follow it and if you want to be a SMS hacker :)

In Japan, the Sega Mark III received an extension called the FM Unit which was later included in the Japanese Master System. This extension was never made available outside of Japan (well, except in Korea). It provide a different sound chip.
In MEKA, you can enable emulation of this sound chip in the "SOUND -> FM UNIT" menu.
The compatibility list mentions all games supporting this sound chip.

So, a FM soundtrack is basically a VGM dump playing with the FM Unit. See in the VGM archives that some games have both PSG (regular sound chip) and FM VGM packages. You can listen to both to understand the difference.

Hm... thanks for the names!

so Boss stays Boss, and Story stays Story? hm...

about the FM and hacking, I think I don't have the time to learn right now... I have the college to worry about too.... so I will see what I can do on some weekends, if I have the time...

PS: The Great American Forest? I thought the stage 2 was something about a lake... ^^'

If it's the same music for all bosses, yes. The manual section telling the story is titled "The Search is On!" but that's not really appropriate.

Yes, the Great American Lake Forests. Of course. Yeah.

4. The Great American Lake Forests (....) & The South Pole
5. The Andes Mountains
6. The Tropical Isles
7. The Pyramids
8. Boss
9. Story
10. Magica's Castle
11. Magica de Spell (.... Final Boss)
12. Victory
13. Ending
14. Invincibility

I'd go with this. The Great American Lake Forests was a joke :P I'd put the boss/story between the first two levels - I presume Victory is only for the last boss?

Yes, victory is only for the final boss ^_^

hm... ok, I'll put Boss and Story between the first 2 stages.... (even if I can choose to start playing at stage 3...)
