TecToy cancelled 7 SMS games in 1997
![]() |
Stumbled on an older thread on Sega8bit.com, I'll copy it below:
https://shinobiman.proboards.com/thread/10892/tectoy-cancelled-sms-games-1997 @wolfticket says: "After looking through some old official Brazilian Sega Club magazines recently, I noticed in the ‘coming soon’ section of issue 22 it advertises Power Rangers on the Sega Master System." "I contacted Maicon Barbosa who worked on the recent Tectoy relaunch of the Mega Drive in Brazil and with his help he contacted Marcelo Caiado who was the software engineer for Tectoy in the 90s and along with Mauricio Guerta did all the hacks and Game Gear ports to the SMS. Turns out that not only did Power Rangers get cancelled in 1997, but at least 6 other games did as well! This was due to Tectoy running out of money and unable to pay for the copyrights and eventually filing for bankruptcy. The 7 cancelled games were: Power Rangers: The Movie Toe Jam & Earl Beavis & Butthead Urban Strike Home Alone (Never got a Brazilian release) Halley Wars (This was released as Space Battle on the Game Gear) Fantasy Zone 1 (Never got a Brazilian release) Unfortunately most of the prototypes for these games have been lost :(" "Left to right: Alexandre Pagano - Designer for Tectoy in the 90s, Marcelo Caiado - Software Engineer for Tectoy in the 90s and Maicon Barbosa at the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Sega and Tectoy last year, and the relaunch of the Mega Drive 1 in Brazil" |

Toe Jam & Earl on Master System? I doubt they'd code it from scratch... | |

Power Rangers The Movie would have been a great addition; this game is really good!
If it had arrived between 95-96, it would have been even more impactful. |

I saw this list a few months ago and was very curious about ToeJam & Earl.
When we made our recent documentary about Wonder Boy III and “Turma da Mônica em: O Resgate”, we had the opportunity to talk to Alexandre Pagano (a former game designer at Tec Toy) and Mauricio Guerta - who was a programmer there, and was mainly responsible for the port of Street Fighter II for the Master System and Duke Nukem 3D for the Mega Drive. We've already published the interview with Pagano on our channel, and Guerta's should be released in January. Alexandre Pagano didn't know about this story, as he left the company in 1994. Mauricio Guerta, on the other hand, stayed much longer and said he had never heard of a port of ToeJam & Earl for the Master System. He mentioned some games that he didn't even know weren't released, such as Beavis and Butt-Head. As he was always involved in ports made from scratch, I got the impression that there was some confusion in Marcelo Caiado's statement. I think maybe he was referring to another game like Earthworm Jim, or something else. |

Seems much more likely. TJ&E isnt especially popular in Brasil AFAIK. and since no 8-bit version exists, I doubt Tec Toy would put that much work into a port. |
