Recent Homebrews and Hacks
Post Posted: Mon Jul 15, 2024 12:09 pm
Hi guys,

I'm planning a follow up video to my recent vid on YouTube yesterday (see below) and want some ideas for more recent Homebrews and Hacks. Obviously I can just look at the competition entries and archive but is anyone working on anything right now they want covered?

Recent video is below. The next one will focus on current and recent developments/hacks specifically.

Thanks,
Oli

Thanks! All of my other SMS homebrew are more than a year old, so I'm not sure they count as recent...

I'm actually very close to finishing up an arcade style shoot-em up-like high score chasing Dragonfly game. Nothing ground breaking, but I certainly would love some coverage! https://github.com/Bofner/Space-Tonbow

This is the current public version, but I've already added FM support and high score saving in the version final version, which should hopefully be ready in about a week or two if you're willing to wait before covering it.

Haha, yeah, I think it's the only SMS game to support it? I couldn't find any others at least

Well, there exists an AKiMW hack, but it would be the first non-hack to have the feature, unless there's some other that neither of us know. ;)

Think I saw this on Revo's channel the other day. Looks very interesting to be fair mate. You have a ROM you can ping over, I'd be happy to give this one a shout. If you wish that is

Awesome video! Do not forget Stella in Adventure World in the next. ^^
A new demo (v1.4) is out. The final version, with physical release, will come soon!

Hi guys,

I'm really struggling to capture any gameplay of these. The title screen works fine but cannot play them. I've detailed the issue for each below.

Stella - stuck on title screen. Buttons don't work
Space Tonbow - stuck on title screen. Same issue.
1969 - Game starts but game is unrecognisable/unplayable.

I'm using an Analogue Mega SG with Everdrive cart. Used Lunar IPS to convert IPS files to the ROM. Like I say they fire up but won't start into the game.

Any suggestions?

Do the patched ROMs work in an emulator?

I wouldn't know mate, never used one. I wonder if its something to do with running it through an everdrive maybe?

(Maybe bring laptop to the meet next week if you're going buddy).

You're playing the ROM as is for Space Tonbow right? It shouldn't need an IPS file to run since it isn't a hack.

It's possible that it isn't compatible with the way the FPGA mimics the Mega Drive. I've never tested it on Mega SG ad don't know much about them. I've only done tests on a JP Mark II and a JP Mega Drive Model II since those are the consoles I own.

Is the music playing on the title screen or is it just frozen? Do you have an SMS controller to try plugging into the Mega SG? It should work with a Mega Drive controller too, but if yuo have one lying around it could be worth a shot

Just tested Stella on the Mega SG with Krikzz's Mega Everdrive Pro and works fine.

For Stella and 1969 you’re probably patching the wrong ROM. There is more than one version of AKiMW, and the patches only work with the later one, iirc.

I haven’t tried it myself, but I see no reason why Space Tonbow shouldn’t work on the Mega SG, as its SMS emulation is very good. Only the FM sound won't work properly, as that’s broken on the Mega SG and Analogue don’t seem inclined to ever fix it.

I had the exact same thought. I'm meeting some fellow Master System enthusiasts at the weekend so will try the cart in a Master System since all my collection is in storage. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys

You can use KiddEd to apply the ips patch.

On startup KiddEd is going to ask for the proper AKiMW rom. It's gonna complain if you provide it the wrong one.
Then you can open the ips file and use Save As to save as a .sms file.

The benefit of this method is that KiddEd ensures that you are patching the correct rom.

Yeah funny story about that which happened to me. About 3 months ago KiddED complained and told me I was using the wrong ROM when I tried to load up my Alex Kidd hack after 3 years of inactive development when I was working on the final v1.3 in May, even though it was already an editored ROM of the rev1 AKIMW ROM. To get around the ''access denied'' screens I loaded up the naked AKIMW rev1 ROM and quickly switched ROMS while the editor was running and then all was good.

Kinda reminds me of a car not starting using the ignition keys and having to rewire the ignition cables to get it working. In other words a simple bypass procedure.

So downloading this latest version via the link says its def an IPS file.

https://tspbr.itch.io/stella-in-adventure-world/download/eyJpZCI6MjQwMTE3MywiZXh...

I guess I'm perhaps using an incompatible Alex Kidd ROM perhaps? No idea.

1969 runs and the title screen starts. I tried changing 50hz and then 60hz but it crashes as soon as I hit a button to start still.

Like I say I'm meeting a few of the other guys tomorrow so may take laptop with me for advise.

Oli...
