Phantasy Star 36th Anniversary retranslation update

It is 20th December and that means it is the Phantasy Star anniversary!

To commemorate we are today officially releasing another update to the retranslation project. New since last year:

  - Updated and expanded French script with a great deal of extra hints and lore added, tying into later games in the series
  - Amended translation notes to better explain certain spells
  - Some script amendments regarding the words Laconian and Zirconian in most languages
  - Spanish:
    - Typo fixes
  - English:
    - Fixed missing wait for button press when talking to Tajim (en)
    - Renamed Dorougue to Druj. Look it up!
    - Renamed Ant-lion to Antlion
  - French:
    - Fixed sometimes corrupted enemy names in French
    - Added more accented letters
    - Extended save game name entry screen to show "Sauvegarder"
  - Technical work:
    - Recompressed all sprite art to make more room for script
    - Script it now stored across the entire ROM space, removing the previous 16KB (compressed) limit

Some additional notes: the original French translation will return for those who dislike the "extra lore" version. I'm also keen to add more languages - please let me know if you'd like to get involved.

Hello and big thanks to Maxim ! :-) Here's a detailed note of what's included in the "extra lore" French version.

This version contains all the officially published Japanese paper data to answer some of the fans' unanswered questions about its history:

  • Japanese booklet accompanying the game
  • period interviews from the book The World of Phantasy Star
  • Phantasy Star Compendium book


The retranslation also contains a few nods to derivative products when these are in line with the official story:

  • PS2 version of the game named Phantasy Star Generation
  • a choose-your-own-adventure book, named Alisa's Adventure book


Finally, the game reveals tips and secrets to guide you:

  • Easter Eggs revealed and explained
  • hidden functions of items and equipment when available
  • complete list of enemies with whom it's possible to communicate
  • clarified directions to certain dungeons and legendary equipment

Hey I love how this translation gets updated every year!
The translation page is still linking to last years thread, fwiw

Is it difficult to add a third font? I tried the translation on Game Gear but the text boxes were barely legible. Maybe the Castle of Illusion font or a similar one?

It’s not really compatible with Game Gear even in the original game as there are graphical glitches in some places. A third font would be fairly easy to add but first we need a Game Gear safe font with lowercase and accented characters…

I have spotted some errors while watching the images of the patch and would like to help. As a native Catalan speaker I think I could help you if you explained me how to do it.

Bones company!

I was the one doing the translation to Catalan. It's quite easy to correct any mistake that you can find. Do you know a bit about git? (otherwise, we can do the fixes without involving git)

Somehow I read about the "English retranslation Project" and my brain thought that repo only contained the English version... yes, I will take a look.

Originally it was only English, but now it contains also Portuguese, Catalan, Spanish and French :-)


The interesting part is on script.yaml, have a look and ask me whatever you want!

If you mean from the Balears, I am not. I was born in Barcelona, where I learned the central variant; however I was raised and actually live in Andorra, where I learned the north-occidental variant.

The advantage I have is that the north-occidental variant of Catalan is pronounced as it is written, therefore it is easier for me to find typos writers from other regions could do without being conscient.

About half of the script has been revised at this point and other files like the menu or the options have been fully fixed.

It really is a very complicated work, especially considering that there is a speed selector for the SMS retranslation, but would it be possible to make an individual patch just to increase the speed by 2x permanently? (No selector.)
