Hello everyone :-)

So here it is ! After viewing the project by xfixium for the port of Phantasy Star II to the Master System
https://www.smspower.org/forums/19275-SMSPhantasyStarII
and because I like the story of Phantasy Star...
I wanted to take stock of all the resources that are — from the player's point of view — a little hidden in Phantasy Star series (Japanese book content and inadequate translations, such as Phantasy Star III).

My personal comments and translations are in orange.

Same dialogue in Phantasy Star III (left image) and Phantasy Star III unofficial retranslation from the Japanese game (right image)

PSIII retranslation gives new meaning to the story of Planet Palma thanks to Ohario and Aina whose names are missing in the US version (and a lot more)

Rebecca Capowski is the person who has translated the most Japanese Phantasy Star resources.
http://www.sceneryrecalled.com/trans/ps.htm

For my part, I give an overview of new contents from the book "The World of Phantasy Star" :

 • working document analysis, pages 76, 77
 • interview with Kotaro HAYASHIDA, pages 105, 106, 107
 • interview with Toru YOSHIDA, page 122

The overall contains interesting data about the series and for the project of xfixium.

Official Japanese books and some games that have been (re)translated from Japanese allow us to learn more about the story :

 • Book The World of Phantasy Star
 • Book Phantasy Star Compendium
 • Phantasy Star II Game Manual
 • Phantasy Star Generation 2 translated script
 • Phantasy Star III retranslated Japanese script
 • Phantasy Star IV script

full description of the intended space exploration mode for Phantasy Star II
______________________________________________________________________________

It was planned to add a space exploration mode to the game.
Zōsa and Ryuon were not the cities of the planet Dezoris but the names of two of the five expected satellites, the last three being Nabāru, Nido and Menōpuga.

a small « space exploration mode » map in Phantasy Star IV

A few notes taken from a working document provide details.

Satellites
(1) Space colony (housing, medical care, store)
(2) Space factory (small, 2-3 people)
(3) Warehouse (goods only)
(4) Operating system (nuclear reactor, surrounding satellites, security and miscellaneous systems)

Other, ships
(1) Peddlers (itinerant stores, information providers)
(2) Carriers (information providers)
(3) Pirates in general (information providers)

Obstacles
(1) Asteroids (swarms of asteroids, slowing spaceship progress)
(2) Nebulous mass (cluster of dark stars, with forced distortion at the entrance)
(3) Black mass (radar ineffective on entry)

About events around planets
(1) Palma (no spaceships encountered during travel)
(2) Motavia (no coordinate information, not visible)
(3) Dezoris (impossible to land ship)

It is said that the space exploration mode may have been abandoned as being too different from the RPG mode.

additional stores planned in Phantasy Star II
_______________________________________________

Stores dedicated to the space exploration mode included services and equipment for spaceships.
Other trade areas showcasing Palma's advanced technology included a Cyborg laboratory.

A Dezorian talks about the advanced technology of Palma in Phantasy Star Generation 2

The development team would have liked to incorporate a few miscellaneous ideas with a mini-mart, a casino, a store specially run by Motavians and the sale of chemical products.

The Story of Phantasy Star II Not Transformed Into a Game
___________________________________________________________

See the links above.
This is the story originally intended for the RPG mode.
This abandoned version shows how Phantasy Star II's plot evolved up to the official final version.

« What was the reason for the hero being changed from Lutz to Eusis?
Editorial Staff: In the settei-text story, the hero was initially Lutz, but in the game, it was Eusis - why is that?
Tohoru Yoshida: It was indeed Lutz at first, wasn't it? But Naka-san [Yuuji Naka] was the first to say that he didn't like the idea of Lutz as the hero. I thought the reason why might have been because, in the settei from I, Lutz was a weak character, and that it'd be too weak if such a character was made the hero in II. So, it was changed from Lutz to Eusis.»

« Why was the story changed?
Yoshida: Also, I think that Aoki-san made the sharp changes she did at the same time that the "Lutz settei" were changed all together. There was also another story - the very first story - which had Lutz traveling through time to help I's Alisa. But the idea of returning to and rewriting the past was not well-liked, and it was at that point that I think Aoki-san felt she wanted to make sweeping changes to the story. And that's why I think that game's scenario was switched around. I recall that that's when the events like the Motabian scenario were taken out. »

It's not often that the storyline of a game (Phantasy Star II) is altered to such an extent...
As the interview indicates, the change of hero is one of the causes.

Rivalry between Rudy(Chaz) and Slay(Rune) in Phantasy Star IV

There's a good chance that the Phantasy Star IV team wanted to wink at this story not transformed into a game in the relationship between the hero Rudy(Chaz) and Slay(Rune), heir to Lutz(Noah).

The many Musk Cats that appear in the Dezoris tunnels are descendants of Myau.

These items have been removed for memory reasons.
In the second half of the game, the player has more money to spend.
There was the idea of buying collector figurines like Tylon or Hapsby giving a particular message.
Tylon's message was forgotten, but Hapsby's said "Hapsby's head is hard" (something robust).

A collectible called "Master System" was planned, as Phantasy Star II was originally intended to run on the Master System. Despite this, the game was released only six months later on Megadrive, a surprisingly short time.

Some of the treasures here are legendary items that were sunk to the bottom of the lake by the ancestors of the Motavians living on this planet, the Tapun Motavian race (たぷん モタビアン).

This was done by the Motavians during an inauguration ceremony. The treasures were to be used in case peace was threatened. These treasures had to be different from other items already obtained in the game.

In Phantasy Star IV, the characters have been created to be the successors to the series' iconic characters. Rudy(Chaz) succeeds Alisa(Alis)/Eusis(Rolf), Fal(Rika) succeeds Nei and Slay(Rune) succeeds Lutz(Noah).

The document details that in Phantasy Star II, Nei ages by one year every month (i.e. 12 years every year), so that she could not coexist with humans.

It was decided that Fal(Rika) would not be exactly the same type as Nei, to enable her to coexist with humans over time.

The Purpose of the Newman's Existence in Phantasy Star IV
___________________________________________________________

« Seed, the supervising computer at the Bioplant, foresaw the harsh conditions Motabia and the people living there would undergo in the generations to come. Seed's assignment in Algol's environment maintenance system was to balance the ecosystem with the birth of a lifeform suited to the environmental changes. To this end, Seed began study on how to preserve the human race by improving it. Data on the "Neitype", studied for a similar purpose before the Great Collapse, became the basis for this lifeform. Fal(Rika) was born under these circumstances, but not just as a new type of human. She was also expected to mix her bloodline with that of a human to perpetuate the new race of humans. The term Newman, then, means to say "the lifeform that will give birth to and become the matriarch of a new human race". »

Fal(Rika) and her son Rui
___________________________

« Here's where things get interesting - in the settei, a somewhat older and sadder Fal(Rika) (sporting a Hunter's uniform and a new haircut - a ragged just-short-of-shoulder-length cut with a Starlights-style ponytail in back) with her *son* Rui (could be "Louie", but I'm assuming his name is a derivative/diminutive of his father's). Rudy(Chaz) isn't pictured. Why? Because he's DEAD. Yep, Shorty, in Yoshida's eyes, never even made it to 30. I can't read all the text next to Fal(Rika) - small, scribbled characters again - but I can give you the gist of it - after Rudy(Chaz)'s death, Fal(Rika) joined the Hunter's Guild and became its most renowned Hunter. She raises her son on her own, and the bandana she now wears was a bequest from Rudy(Chaz). Her son, Rui, is eight years old, though, because of his mother's blood, he's growing up a little faster than usual and should reach adulthood at 12 or 13. He's also showing great potential as a Hunter. But, back to Fal(Rika) now - though the canonity of this is sketchy, I feel so sorry for the dear. The entity that was, in effect, her father, blows himself up, she leaves Forren (Wren), the only other person who was like family to her, to stay with Rudy(Chaz), then he dies early, leaving her to take care of a child and become a brood mare for a new super-race of humans. What a sad fate. »

The heroes are Eusis (Rolf), Nei, Rudger Steiner (Rudolf Steiner), Anne Saga (Amy Sage), Huey Reane (Hugh Thompson), Amia Amirski (Anna/Amia Zirski), Keinz Ji An (Kain/Kind Josh) and Silka Levinia (Shir/Shilka Gold).

Phantasy Star Generation 2 presents each character properly, based on data from Phantasy Star II: Text Adventure. So it can be used as a basis except for a point on Amia's story which is explored in greater depth in PS II Text Adventure :

*Phantasy Star Unknown Story*
https://www.smspower.org/forums/19660-PhantasyStarRetranslationFrenchVersionUpda...

The Master system game manual and the Phantasy Star Compendium book are the most important resources to reveal secrets about the game's story.
Here are the most important ones translated from my French retranslation in the link above.

An elder of the planet Palma from the city of Camineet in Phantasy Star

« Palma has abundant vegetation.
Its civilization, which dates back to ancient times, now extends to the colonies of the planets Motavia and Dezoris.
Motavia is closest to the sun, with a dry, desert-like surface. Motavia is a developing planet.
Spaceships run daily between Palma and Motavia, whose spaceport was recently opened.
Dezoris is the planet furthest from the sun. Its surface is frozen and very little life thrives there.
Its development has therefore been delayed, but the construction of a spaceport is still planned in a few years' time. »

In Phantasy Star, the closest planet to the sun is Motavia.
In Phantasy Star II, Palma will become the closest planet to the sun.

A Dezorian in a town of the planet Dezoris in Phantasy Star

« A solar eclipse occurs once every hundred years on the planet Dezoris.
At that time, the planet is plunged into total darkness for ten days.
It is during this period that an item called the Eclipse Torch is used to light the Sacred Flame.
Revered by the Dezorians, this flame emits a light similar to the rays of the sun. »

The Governor-General of planet Motavia in Phantasy Star

« Alisa... Your father was Aures Landeel, King of Algol.
You were less than a year old when your father died suddenly.
A lady of the court mistakenly believed that LaShiec was responsible for the king's death.
But it wasn't, and he was a good king.
However, after fifteen years of fair reign, he learned secrets about the genesis of the Algol solar system.
He created a space-time door and came into contact with a sealed spiritual life-form.
He then invoked this force and became its faithful servant. In the same year, a reign of terror began.
In any case, long before these events, the court decided it was best to move you away.
You were placed in my care.
When you were barely two years old, it was finally decided to send you to live with a loyal subordinate.
In that house was a boy called Nero, then barely five years old.
You were raised there as brother and sister by Nero's parents.
Five years ago, they died in an accident when you were ten and he was thirteen.
As you know, Nero worked as a baggage handler at the Paseo spaceport on the planet Motavia.
Unfortunately, since the beginning of spring, Algol's solar system had been under threat.
Seeing this, Nero began to take an interest in LaShiec's affairs and lost his life when he turned eighteen.
You were only fifteen years old when you took over your brother's quest.
You discovered the truth on your journey.
LaShiec consented to let dark forces plunge Algol into chaos in exchange for eternal life.
Monsters sprang up all over Algol, threatening the livelihood of its inhabitants.
Now that LaShiec is gone, Alisa, will you follow in your father's footsteps?
Will you take your place as queen of the Algol solar system? »

A view from Bala Malay hill in Phantasy Star

« -Epilogue to Alisa and Lutz-
Alisa and Lutz were determined to preserve peace in all spaces and at all times.
Each entered a deep cryogenic sleep until the day when the world would need one of them.

Lutz soon discovered that the portal opened by LaShiec could not be perfectly closed.
He calculated that its menacing fluctuations would reach their peak in around a thousand years.
He and other Espers settled on the planet Dezoris, then entered a deep sleep.
Lutz awoke in time to influence the events of the Phantasy Star II millennium.

In Phantasy Star Gaiden, Alisa brought help to the planet Copto, a light-year away from Algol's solar system.
She then left the planet to save the Algol solar system from a new threat. »

It is finished ! I am happy I was able to do it. :-)
