"Where is it ? The Quest for the 10th island" is an original puzzle game. It's my second attempt for Sega Mastersystem. Hope you'll enjoy it :)

You have to find the correct 3x3 pattern before the time expires. Your searching skills are being tested to the max!

As we're used to with Rikku, we have a very well finished game. Several game modes and you even managed to integrate a story mode into this puzzle game !

I like the arcade feeling that emerges both thanks to Tobikomi's music and the interface. In summary, a high quality homebrew!

For the next evolutions a VS mode where 2 players could find the patterns first, or even a two-cursors coop mode where a player better than me could help (I'm going to practice but my first game was not glorious :- D).

Many thanks Guy for your comment

Concerning your ideas, they are great : a coop or a battle mode...

I had already thought about a 'Battle' mode but not like you said, but the 'Coop' mode... TOP ;)
For this last mode, I'll have to add some difficulty since it will be divided by 2 Lol

I hope you will present something next year or before ;)

Have fun with Wii? :)

Eric

ps: for a better game & music experience, please switch to 50hz :)

Very fun and surprisingly addictive. I think I am getting good at it.

It could be my emulator (I was playing it from the zip file) but are scores not saved in SRAM? They seemed to get lost after switching for a different game.

wow this is so cool!
and a coop mode would be wonderful. There are few sms coop games overall, and this would be perfect.
I guess even at the current difficulty it would be fine.

This game is great, I can't stop playing it, great stuff @Ricco59!

Loving the jolly music and feel like every round I'm getting quicker at spotting the patterns, super addictive.

I think I would have missed the Story mode if I hadn't seen it on the YouTube video and if others hadn't mentioned it. Maybe Story mode should be the default?

Just one tiny complaint - playing on Emulicious I often find it hard to land my cursor exactly where I want to, it often skips over and takes a few ups and downs to select - maybe some kind of "debouncing" or short tap hold-off would help?

Hi Fans ;)

I'm really happy that you like Wii? :)

@Raphnet, I don't save scores using SRAM because I simply don't know how at this moment :) So, you're right : when you switch off the SMS, the scores are lost
@Segarule, I think I've corrected the PASSWORD issue

Don't hesitate to give me feedback if you have any questions, suggestions or notice any bugs ;)

Here is a first update and here is what I've done

* for the Segarule's PASSWORD DISPLAY Issue... corrected (I hope ;) )

* during the display of the small CHALLENGE STAGE sign, the PressFire is displayed. It should have been hidden and displayed after the end of the jingle... corrected

* when the little space ship arrives over M33 archipelago, the engine'sound is a kind of alarm sound because Reko is out of energy. If you look at the propulsors, the flash light is showing us that there is a problem onboard (the flashing light combine some colors including black one). When you resolved the 2nde island, the engine sound is correct but I forgot a Flag (stupid I am). It's corrected and now the flashing light is smooth ;) Reko reloaded energy after passing first island ;)
It's a detail but I love this kind of things ;)

See you ;)

======================================================================
HOWTOPLAY note:

Hi

"Where is it ? The Quest for the 10th island" is an original puzzle game
It's my second attempt for Sega Mastersystem. Hope you'll enjoy it :)

Important note : it's not a hack, it's a totally rewritten game using Sverx library ! Thx

Here are the tools I've used (thx to their authors)
Emulicious
Meka
Bmp2Tiles
Gimp
Mod2Psg
PSGTools
Sdcc
Visual Studio Code
Sverx's devkitSMS

Thanks to the SMSPOWER TEAM and forum users

Speed and observation skills will be essential in this game!
Have fun with Where is it ? The Quest for the 10th Island

EM

first of all, THE CREDITS
=========================
- Tobikomi for ALL the sfx, jingles and musics. You are a genius :)
- Kagasan for his comments and the intro's ladybug ;)
- Ludo for islands and spaceship gfx

HOWTOPLAY
=========
You have to find the correct 3x3 pattern before the time expires. Your searching skills are being tested to the max

GAME MODES
==========
Arcade - Easy
-------------
This mode contains some empty colored squares, some drawn colored squares, some insects to help the player to find your way around the play area

Arcade - Normal
---------------
As above but without ghosts, instects, etc...

Arcade - Hard
-------------
This mode only contains drawn squares

Arcade - Mix
------------
This one, all the easy one + normal one + hard one + new squares :)

Story Mode
----------
In this mode, you must help Reko, hounded by Druhl, to return to his planet by crossing 10 islands located on the planet M33.
Each time you 'finish' an island, a password is displayed. You can then start again from this island

CHALLENGE STAGE
===============
After completing the 10 rounds (in each game mode), there is a CHALLENGE stage where all points are bonus, you don't lose any life, you can even make a PREFECT (you win a life) but you don't have the possibility to put the game in 'Pause'...

CONTROLS
========
Stick - to move the cursor
Fire1 - Validate the correct 3x3 pattern
Fire2 - Pause the game. /!\ Attention, you have 10 'Pause' per stage /!\
Hold Fire1 - Quit game and return to Menu

SCORES
======
It depends on how long it takes you to complete a round
During the CHALLENGE STAGE each pattern found is 200 pts. The ramaining time is muliply by 5 and if you look at the timer, there are 4 zones : RED, YELLOW, GREEN and BLUE
If you finish the challenge stage in the
RED Zone, the Timer Bonus is multiplied by 4
YELLOW Zone, it's multiplied by 3
GGREEN Zone, it's multiplied by 2
BLUE Zone, it's multiplied by 1 !

LIFE
====
EXTRA LIFE every 5000 pts
One extra life if you do a PERFECT in CHALLENGE STAGE

Probably an emulator issue? I can’t remember having seen this kind of behavior on real hardware, or Emulicious for that matter.

It’s there any particular reason why you’re using Fusion? As far as I know that emulator is widely considered outdated and inaccurate.

I'm sure segarule's reasons are personal, as sure is no newbie, but I would point out there's a sticky post at the top of the competitions page instructing new visitors in how to install Kega Fusion in order to test the competition entries...

I respect all your technical knowledge. When i pointed the problem in 1st version i tested with 2 emulators (Fusion and Emulicious) and i saw the same problem. I just did a record with fusion because i have an easy option for avi output. While the problem with primates from willbriton can be a emulator behavior i dont see why to jump rounds in new version would be a problem with Fusion. But even today i updated the Emulicous and the same problem persist. For while for comodity reason i like test more in emulators and after use it in real hardware. So i dont can say how it running in real hardware.

Hi Fans,

I managed to recreate the segarule's issue (tested on Emulicious) :
you have to play in story mode and write down the different passwords. Everything is perfect and you can finish the game

If you are blocked on an island, enter the password of this island and, indeed when you will pass to the following island, the password will not be displayed.

It's solved : I forgot a pair of brackets ...

Thank you very much segarule and to all of you

Have fun

Please segarule, tells me that it works now ;)

I tested with Fusion now and at first glance everything seems working flawlessly. It dont jumped the others rounds and show me the password in next island. I will continue later.

No more adding,
No alternative ending my friend ;)

I'm going to test it for a last time before validate the 1.4 version

Edit:
I corrected a little bug :
while entering password, if it's wrong, the story appears... that's correct
but in entering password part, when you directly press fire2, the islands map appears. That's not good. It's now corrected and ...
...here is the Final version of

Where is it ? The Quest For The 10th Island

Can someone add this last update in the Wiki part ? Thx

This game reminds me very much of Find it! by the same author entered into MSXdev '20 mentioned on page 122 of its report

https://www.msxdev.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/msxdev20_final_report.pdf

and in both games I scan every nine square in order to find it.

I just want to go on record and say that the person above isn't an alternate account of me, in case there was any doubt or any suspicion, since the similar name could have led to confusion.

I actually didn't play any of the entries of the current contest yet, to be honest.

Unexpectedly fun game!

But I have to say, some shades of green and blue are really close to each other, and it is tough to differentiate them.
It seems this is a port of an game initially developed for Colecovision, so I assume the palette may have gone through some changes while porting the game to the SMS.

In any case, I completed the story mode. That 10th island is evil in the best sort of way :D

Great work, very polished!

Thanks for your nice words Armixer24

You're right, Wii? was originally programmed for Colecovision. It was the first game I created for this console and it was on this project that I discovered the machine and the C language. By the way, I got lost in my own code LOL

Concerning colour blindness, I'm aware that it can be difficult but using 8x8 tiles, it was hard for me to create different things.
Next time I'll use metatiles (16x16)

Concerning this update, this is it, the 'ULTIMATE' version of Where Is It? is finished :)

What's new compared to the previous version : CO-OP mode

After entering the team name, 2 players can play simultaneously on the screen. The points are accumulated for the team and will appear in the corresponding score table.
At the end of the game, each player will know how many patterns he has found ;)

How to access
In the MENU, click on OPTIONS. A new window will appear displaying the game mode SOLO or CO-OP and the difficulty mode EASY/NORMAL/HARD/MIX and STORY.
Back to the main menu with 'BACK TO MENU', click on START GAME and off you go!
ATTENTION, the PASSWORD does not work in CO-OP mode (another DRÜHL trick!)

If you have any questions, don't hesitate, and if you see any bugs, you know who to contact :)

Have fun
Eric

I will now be able to test the different entries :)
See you

Can a moderator update the wiki page ?? Many thanks

@RetroTom
You're right

A friend of mine (Fabf) decided to make a port from scratch in basic (if I remember) to MSX1 after having playing my colecovision version.

A year after, for the MSXDev'21, I decided to port Wii? and DoTheSame

Now it's Mastersystem turn.

Which console/computer will be the next ;)

Really great game. It's one of my favorites this year. The only remark I have is that the controls could be a bit better. It seems like sometimes it's skipping over a tile.
