Hi! I'm the guy from VGDensetsu.
I forgot to ask Muto about Alex Kidd in Shinobi World. I'm currently working on a Master System / Mark III gallery for my website. It's far from complete but I already have identified dozens of artists and am wainting for answers from some of them. |

I guess there’s more in the same style, e.g. Wonder Boy III. Is it likely they’re all by the same artist or was it a common style?

This style of airbrush animation was quite common at the time. It is mainly by the faces of the characters that you can recognize the style of an artist.

I sent him another message earlier today and am waiting for a reply.
Meanwhile, I got a some info from Mari Koizumi, a former Sega in-house illustrator. I already knew she illustrated Phantasy Star Gaiden... https://twitter.com/koizumimari1/status/1059249969633275904 ...but she confirmed that she also worked on Shadam Crusader... https://twitter.com/koizumimari1/status/1593930989050683392 ...an added that she did the cover art for the Japanese version of Chuck Rock for Game Gear. https://twitter.com/koizumimari1/status/1593945027239383040 |

We should add these to our game credits…

Very interesting! The 16-bit covers mentioned aren't particular favorites of mine, but I do like most of his 8-bit art. In particular that of Psycho Fox and Basketball Nightmare.

I asked Osamu Muto about Alex Kidd in Shinobi World. He recognizes his style but doesn't remember the illustration itself.

I've uploaded my gallery of Master System / Mark III cover art for which I've found the identity of the illustrator(s) involved as well as a more detailed page on the work done on each game for which I've found info (click on the artist's name to see the sources).
