Why the price of the MK-2000 is very high (SMS)

Hi at all,

i don't understand, why the price of the Japanese SMS
(MK-2000) is very high. On ebay you find a complete set for only
300 or up dollars, but never find the console only.

On yahoo auctions, the situation are probably better to find
the console only in junk condition, at decent price, but for the charge of taxes of import, the price still high.

I never thinking to buy a MK-2000 is very hard like this.

It's really rare too?

Thanks so much at all, and sorry for the mini rant.

I would guess scarce since the Mark III/SMS didn't reach the popularity of its competitors, and was produced for about a year before being (seemingly quickly) put out of production in place of the Mega Drive.
(as I recall from the thread of unreleased/rumored games, Sega pretty much cut its entire catalog of planned late 1988 Japanese releases, leaving Bomber Raid as the sole surviving post-MD release.)

(wait... Bomber Raid was a port of the 1987 Sonic Boom arcade game? I better go check again, only remember that game because of the obvious jokes one could make about that title.)
