Wonderboy in Monster World - character sprite replacement
Posted: Sun Nov 21, 2021 8:14 pm Last edited by rpgista on Mon Nov 22, 2021 6:02 am; edited 3 times in total |
A replacement for the main character sprite in Wonderboy in Monster World, using the design from the mega drive game (which is superior to the one made for the sms). The sprites have the same total number of colors (14+1). The spritesheet from ywackhary was followed, let me know if any frames are missing.
Credits to ywackhary (sms spritesheet) and ryan914 (mega drive spritesheet). |

I don't know exactly how it works. But Shion also uses a shield...

Should be easy to add. | |

Wonderful! Any plans for the backgrounds? Perhaps a palette hack alone would already get you far. Change orange/red to brown. | |

Added the sprites with shield (a custom made one, but the original design is also included). Also added several new animations that I was already porting - more frames for the attacking and walking animations, a climbing ladder animation (the original game uses the climbing rope animation for everything), and a couple more things. These are not a part of the original game, and are included in case someone decides to improve the player animations in the future. The mega drive sprites are very close to the sms ones, but replacing them would probably still require revising the collision logic as well anyway (since they are not 100% equivalent). Hopefully such a project would also focus on fixing the hit detection for the player attacks, which is a noticeable weak point in this game.
As for the backgrounds and palette hacking, this might be a bit too complex for me. Specially since this game is a port of one of the best looking games in the mega drive collection, so it already looks very, very good, as far as the sms allows. There are very few options for brown and beige shades in the sms palette. They used shades of red and orange as intermediates, it would be hard to do anything else while keeping the same tiles, afaik. Unless you are willing to change the backgrounds in a deeper way, redesign them, which would be hard to get right. I do see some tiles that could be better, maybe I could work a bit on a few of them, see how it goes. |
