Phantasy Star on Game Gear
Post Posted: Thu Sep 24, 2020 12:51 pm
I always thought Phantasy Star when played via a convertor on a Game Gear was problematic due to some pin compatibility issues.

On my 2 ASIC Game Gear that I installed an original MCwill screen to, Phantasy star has some graphical glitching but otherwise seems playable and I considered this normal.

However, recently I picked up a 1 ASIC Game Gear that I repaired, but wasn't keen to pay out as much money for an original MCwill screen has I had previously and when I saw the "Funny Plaything Ver 2.0-B" clone screen which advertised:

① Power saving design with DC-DC power supply chip.
② Better SMS Game compatibility.
③ Add P1 P2 label,Add 3MP1 jumper point.
④ High quality PCB than V1 and V2.
⑤ Adjustable Brightness Control

I was intrigued and the price was right for me to give it a go.

So after installing this clone into my Game Gear and the results being very good. I was very happy with it.

While I could not understand how it supposedly has "better SMS game compatibility", when I booted up Phantasy Star on it, I find it is totally free of Graphical glitches.

Does anyone how a clue why this might be, did the clone actually improve compatibility or is it something the 1 ASIC Game Gear fixed?

I think these screens are all based on the native screen logic (not VDP emulation) so any such corruption would be a feature of the ASIC.

Thanks for the reply @Maxim.

That confirms what I was assuming, as it makes no sense that the new screen could fix such an issue.

Maybe the purported "Better SMS Game compatibility" is just to do with its scaling but I honestly can't see any difference between them either.

On the same note I am now curious if Rainbow Islands that crashes on SMS hardware at the ending would crash or not on the various Game Gear revisions.

The Rainbow Islands crash is a code error, not a compatibility issue.

I'm curious about those "copy screens" Suteneko. Could you provide a link? Or a shop name? I can't find anything Game Gear related on Funnyplaying's website. Thanks in advance
